Oakland Unified's Algebra 1 and Geometry rule and routes to Calculus
- Oakland Unified requires 30 credits of high school math to graduate, and every student must complete Algebra 1 and Geometry. A diploma also needs 230 total credits and a 2.00 GPA in required courses. For UC and CSU admission, OUSD notes the A-G math requirement is 3 years, with 4 recommended.
- In OUSD, Algebra 1 is the standard 9th grade course, and the district says acceleration before 9th grade is not required for college-ready math. Its acceleration options list routes to Calculus by 12th grade: an Algebra 2 and Math Analysis compression course, Geometry and Algebra 2 together in 10th grade, or summer intensives.
- Oakland students in grades 3 to 8 and 11 take California's Smarter Balanced math test, part of CAASPP. Each district picks a local window of at least 25 instructional days inside the statewide window. The latest official statewide window, for 2025-26, ran January 20 to June 30, 2026.
A one-to-one online tutor can build Algebra 1 and Geometry skills, prepare a student for OUSD's Algebra 1 Certification Exam, and practice CAASPP-style math problems before the spring testing window.
