- Worth knowing in California
- Under California's 2023 Mathematics Framework, districts can offer a traditional Algebra 1, Geometry, Algebra 2 pathway or an integrated Math I-III pathway.
Palo Alto Unified reports 10,318 TK-12 students across its elementary, middle and high schools.

Palo Alto Unified's compacted math pathway and Math Validation test
- Palo Alto Unified's standard middle school pathway is compacted, covering four years of math in three: Foundational Math in grade 6, Concepts in Math in grade 7 and Algebra 1 in grade 8. It leads to Geometry or Geometry Honors in 9th grade, and classes are heterogeneously grouped.
- PAUSD students can accelerate one extra year by passing the optional Math Validation test, a paper-and-pencil exam built with WestEd. Notices go out through ParentSquare in late January, and the test is given in March after school at JLS. A 6th grader who passes takes Algebra 1 in grade 7 and Geometry Honors in grade 8.
- To graduate from PAUSD, students need 30 math credits through Algebra 2, including Geometry, with a D- or better, among 220 total credits. For UC and CSU A-G, the same courses need a C- or better, and Palo Alto High School recommends 40 math credits, about four years.
A one-to-one online tutor can help a student keep pace in PAUSD's compacted pathway, review the standards for the course being challenged before the Math Validation test, and support Geometry and Algebra 2.
