RISE math, Utah's Secondary Math path and SLCSD advanced academics
- Salt Lake City students in grades 3 to 8 take Utah's RISE math test each spring. USBE's 2026-27 Assessment Resource Guide sets the spring window for March 9 to June 4, 2027. High school students now also take RISE end-of-course tests in Secondary Math I and II, from February 23 to June 4, 2027.
- Utah requires 3.0 units of high school math, built on Secondary Mathematics I, II and III. A parent can opt a student out of Secondary Math III with a written request, but the student must then earn a third math credit from the Board-approved list. Passing Calculus with a C or higher completes the math requirement.
- SLCSD assesses kindergarten and grade 3 students at its schools each January, through a process that includes the CogAT, to identify students for full-day Magnet Gifted and Talented classes or the part-time AAMP program. Non-SLCSD families, and sixth or seventh graders seeking middle school Magnet, can opt in from September 14 to December 11, 2026.
A one-to-one online tutor can review the Secondary Math I and II content that RISE now tests, keep grades 3 to 8 students on track before spring RISE, and build the reasoning skills SLCSD's January assessment looks for.
