  • Torrance Unified lists a Middle School Accelerated Mathematics Test for grades 5, 6 and 7 on its testing page. In the Advanced Math Pathway described by Calle Mayor Middle School, Math 6, 7 and 8 are compacted into grades 6 and 7, and students take Algebra in grade 8.
  • Advanced math placement in Torrance uses several measures, not one test. Calle Mayor lists math portfolios, CAASPP scores, teacher recommendation and grades, and says advancement should be based on performance, not potential. GATE identification is not a factor in course admittance.
  • West High lists a traditional high school sequence: Algebra 1, Geometry, Algebra 2, then Precalculus or Trigonometry, each with an honors option. Financial Algebra, which covers budgeting, credit, investing and taxes, is offered to juniors and seniors at all four Torrance comprehensive high schools.
