How it works, in short

TaleemSquare NNAT prep is live, one-to-one online help for children in kindergarten to grade 8 who will take the Naglieri Nonverbal Ability Test, often for gifted program screening. A tutor introduces shape-based puzzles, such as finding a missing piece or completing a pattern in a grid, and builds the visual reasoning behind them.

NNAT3 has 48 questions in 30 minutes and needs no reading. Districts set their own cut-offs, and Glendale Unified says its NNAT3 screener needs no prior preparation, so we never use real test items. Plans start at $85 a month, with no contract.

What changes after a term of lessons

Worked solution of a linear equation on the shared lesson whiteboard
Lessons happen on a shared whiteboard, so your child solves while the tutor watches and guides (example lesson).

Familiar with the format

Knows what missing-piece and grid puzzles look like and how the five answer choices work, so test day holds fewer surprises.

Stronger visual reasoning

Practices noticing how shapes change in size, rotation and number, skills that also support geometry.

Calm and focused

Works steadily through a 30-minute set, checks each choice and moves on when stuck, without rushing or freezing.

What we cover

Lessons follow your child's own school or homeschool curriculum. These are the areas we work on most at this level.

Missing-piece puzzles

Choosing the piece that completes a large design, the kind of item Pearson describes as the easiest.

Pattern grids

Finding the rule across 2-by-2, 2-by-3 and 3-by-3 arrays of shapes and picking what fills the gap.

Shape changes

Spotting changes in size, rotation, added parts and step-by-step progression.

Relationships between parts

Seeing how rows and columns relate, so the answer follows from a rule, not a guess.

Spatial thinking

Turning, flipping and combining shapes in the mind, practiced with drawings and simple activities.

Careful choice checking

Comparing all five options and ruling out near-misses that differ in one small detail.

Steady pacing

Short timed sets that build focus for the full 30 minutes.

Signs your child could use help

  • Will take the NNAT for a gifted or advanced program
  • Is in a grade where the district screens all students
  • Has never seen shape-pattern or matrix puzzles before
  • Is still learning English and does better with pictures
  • Gets anxious with timed tests or new formats
  • Wants to build visual reasoning beyond the classroom

One of these on its own is normal. Two or three together usually point to a specific gap, and finding it is what the free assessment is for.

Taught to your curriculum, wherever you live

Naglieri Nonverbal Ability Test (NNAT3, Pearson)

NNAT3 is a nonverbal measure of general ability for grades K to 12, with 48 multiple-choice items in 30 minutes. Levels run from A for kindergarten to G for grades 10 to 12. Results include the Naglieri Ability Index, percentile ranks and stanines.

For families moving from the UK

NNAT uses shapes instead of words, so no curriculum knowledge is needed. Children who have not seen matrix puzzles before get a gentle introduction to each format.

Level: Year 1 to Year 9

For families moving from Canada

NNAT measures reasoning with shapes rather than what was taught in school, so a move from Canada does not put your child behind. We introduce the formats and practice them calmly.

Level: Kindergarten to grade 8

For families moving from Australia

NNAT puzzle formats are likely new to children who studied in Australia. Because the test uses no words, we focus on visual patterns and calm, steady habits.

Level: Foundation to Year 8

Who teaches your child

Every TaleemSquare math tutor passes the same five checks before their first class. Your child keeps the same tutor each week, and if the fit is not right we switch tutor at no cost. Tutors are based in the US, UK, Canada, Australia, Pakistan and India, and all of them teach in English.

How we screen and match tutors
  • Identity and references checked

Every tutor is identity-verified and reference-checked before teaching a student.

  • Subject test

Tutors pass a subject test before they are matched with a child.

  • Spoken-English assessment

Lessons are taught in English, so every tutor passes a spoken-English assessment.

  • Live sample lesson

Tutors teach a live sample lesson before they are hired, to show they can explain clearly.

  • Open to parents

Classes are one-to-one in a password-protected room. Sit in on any class or ask for a recording.

How NNAT prep lessons work

Start gently

The first lesson tries a few shape puzzles of each kind to see which feel easy and which need work.

Teach the reasoning, not answers

We explain how to find the rule in each puzzle with our own practice items, never real test questions.

Short, calm practice

Sessions use short sets, with timed practice added only as test day gets closer.

Updates for parents

You get a short note after every lesson on what was covered and what to practice next.

Common worries, honest answers

“Is it fair to prepare for the NNAT?”

Glendale Unified says its NNAT3 screener needs no prior preparation, and we agree drilling is not the goal. We never use real test items. Seeing the formats once and building real visual reasoning simply helps your child show what they can do.

“My child is still learning English. Will that hurt their score?”

Pearson says NNAT3 uses pictorial directions and needs no spoken or written language, and describes it as useful for English language learners. In lessons we use simple English and lots of visual examples.

“Will this guarantee a gifted placement?”

No one can promise that. Districts set their own rules. Glendale Unified looks for the 92nd percentile on its grade 3 screener, while St. Louis Public Schools refers second graders with an NAI of 110 or higher for further evaluation.

Frequently asked questions

What is on the NNAT?

NNAT3 items use shapes and designs in black, white, yellow, blue and green. Easier items ask which piece completes a large design. Harder items show shapes in 2-by-2, 2-by-3 or 3-by-3 arrays, and the student picks which of five options fills the gap.

How long is the NNAT?

Each form has 48 multiple-choice items, and students get 30 minutes. With directions and sample items, Pearson's manual says the whole session takes about 35 to 45 minutes. Schools can give it on paper or online, to a group.

What are the NNAT levels?

NNAT3 has seven levels: A for kindergarten, B for grade 1, C for grade 2, D for grades 3 to 4, E for grades 5 to 6, F for grades 7 to 9 and G for grades 10 to 12. Levels A to D have two forms each.

How is the NNAT scored?

Results include raw and scaled scores, the Naglieri Ability Index (NAI), percentile rank, stanine and normal curve equivalent, by age. A percentile rank is not the same as percent correct. Districts decide which scores and cut-offs they use.

What NNAT score do you need for gifted programs?

It depends on your district. Glendale Unified in California screens all third graders in spring and looks for the 92nd percentile. St. Louis Public Schools screens all second graders and refers students with an NAI of at least 110, the 73rd percentile, for further evaluation. Check your district's current rules.

How much does NNAT prep cost?

Plans start at $85 a month for two 45-minute lessons a week, with no contract. You can start with a free assessment, where the tutor tries a few shape puzzles with your child and suggests a plan.
