How it works, in short

TaleemSquare Regents math tutoring is live, one-to-one online help for New York high school students preparing for the Regents exams in Algebra I, Geometry or Algebra II. A tutor works on the Next Generation math standards your child finds hardest and practices the three-hour exam format, with a graphing calculator and written answers.

The 2027 Regents periods are January 26 to 29, June 15 to 25 and August 17 to 18. Current diploma rules still apply while NYSED's plan to drop the passing requirement is finalized. Plans start at $85 a month, with no contract.

What changes after a term of lessons

Worked solution of a linear equation on the shared lesson whiteboard
Lessons happen on a shared whiteboard, so your child solves while the tutor watches and guides (example lesson).

Ready for Regents-level reasoning

Solves multi-step problems from the Next Generation standards and writes out full work for the 2, 4 and 6 credit questions.

Confident with the graphing calculator

Uses the graphing calculator every Regents math exam requires for graphs, tables and checking answers, without leaning on it for everything.

Aiming for the score you need

Targets at least Level 3, which meets the Regents diploma requirement, or higher for a stronger start in the next course.

What we cover

Lessons follow your child's own school or homeschool curriculum. These are the areas we work on most at this level.

Linear equations and inequalities

Solving, graphing and writing linear equations, inequalities and systems, the core of the Algebra I exam.

Functions and modeling

Linear, quadratic and exponential functions, reading graphs and tables, and building models from real situations.

Quadratics and polynomials

Factoring, completing the square, the quadratic formula and polynomial operations across Algebra I and Algebra II.

Congruence, similarity and proof

Transformations, triangle congruence and similarity, and writing clear proofs for the Geometry exam.

Circles, trigonometry and constructions

Right triangle trigonometry, circle relationships, area and volume, and constructions with a compass and straightedge.

Algebra II functions and trigonometry

Exponential and logarithmic functions, the unit circle, trigonometric functions and sequences for the Algebra II exam.

Statistics and probability

Data displays, regression, normal distributions and probability, which appear on the Algebra I and Algebra II exams.

Constructed-response answers

Showing complete work on the 2, 4 and 6 credit questions that are scored with rubrics.

Signs your child could use help

  • Scored below Level 3 on a math Regents exam
  • Is taking Algebra I, Geometry or Algebra II this year
  • Needs a retake in January, June or August
  • Struggles with proofs or multi-step word problems
  • Is aiming for three math Regents for an advanced designation
  • Needs more help than the school's Regents review offers

One of these on its own is normal. Two or three together usually point to a specific gap, and finding it is what the free assessment is for.

Taught to your curriculum, wherever you live

Regents Examinations in Mathematics (New York State Education Department)

The Algebra I, Geometry and Algebra II Regents exams follow the Next Generation Mathematics Learning Standards, first given in June 2024, 2025 and 2026. Each exam allows three hours and requires a graphing calculator. Results use five levels, and Level 3 meets the Regents diploma requirement.

For families moving from the UK

The Regents math exams cover roughly GCSE maths and some early A level topics. We check your child's gaps against the New York standards rather than the UK curriculum, then practice the Regents format.

Level: GCSE maths and early A level maths

For families moving from Canada

Provincial high school math covers similar topics, but the Regents exams follow New York's Next Generation standards and their own question formats. We map what your child learned to those standards and practice the format.

Level: Grades 9-12 math

For families moving from Australia

Australian Years 9 to 12 maths covers similar ground, but the Regents exams follow New York's standards and a fixed exam format. We fill gaps against the New York standards and practice the format.

Who teaches your child

Every TaleemSquare math tutor passes the same five checks before their first class. Your child keeps the same tutor each week, and if the fit is not right we switch tutor at no cost. Tutors are based in the US, UK, Canada, Australia, Pakistan and India, and all of them teach in English.

How we screen and match tutors
  • Identity and references checked

Every tutor is identity-verified and reference-checked before teaching a student.

  • Subject test

Tutors pass a subject test before they are matched with a child.

  • Spoken-English assessment

Lessons are taught in English, so every tutor passes a spoken-English assessment.

  • Live sample lesson

Tutors teach a live sample lesson before they are hired, to show they can explain clearly.

  • Open to parents

Classes are one-to-one in a password-protected room. Sit in on any class or ask for a recording.

How Regents math lessons work

Start with a skills check

The first lesson finds which course standards your child has secure and which need work, using Regents-style questions.

Teach, then practice the format

Each topic is taught step by step, then practiced in multiple-choice and constructed-response questions like those on the exam.

Build toward test conditions

Short timed sets grow into full three-hour practice exams as the Regents period gets closer.

Updates for parents

You get a short note after every lesson on what was covered and what to practice next.

Common worries, honest answers

“Are Regents exams still required to graduate?”

For now, yes. NYSED says current diploma requirements, including Regents exams, stay in effect until the Board of Regents adopts the regulation changes. Under its plan, students who entered grade 9 in 2024 or later would still take the exams but would not need to pass them for a diploma.

“My child gets anxious about tests. Will this make it worse?”

We keep early practice calm and short, and build confidence by showing progress. Knowing the format well usually makes test day feel familiar instead of scary.

“My child failed a Regents exam. When can they retake it?”

Regents exams are given in January, June and August. In 2027 the periods are January 26 to 29, June 15 to 25 and August 17 to 18. Ask your school which math exams it offers in each period, and we plan lessons around that date.

Frequently asked questions

When are the Regents math exams in 2027?

NYSED has set the 2027 Regents periods as January 26 to 29, June 15 to 25 and August 17 to 18. No state exams are given on June 18, the Juneteenth holiday. NYSED posts subject-by-subject times for each period, and your school confirms when to report.

How long are the Regents math exams?

Each exam allows three hours. Algebra I has 35 questions worth 82 credits, Geometry has 35 questions worth 80 credits and Algebra II has 36 questions worth 82 credits, mixing multiple-choice and constructed-response questions in four parts.

What calculator does my child need for the Regents?

Students must have a graphing calculator for the full exam in Algebra I, Geometry and Algebra II. Calculators with symbol manipulation are not allowed on Algebra I or Algebra II. Geometry also needs a compass and straightedge, and each exam includes a reference sheet.

What do the Regents performance levels mean?

Results use five levels. Level 3 minimally meets expectations and satisfies the Regents diploma requirement. Level 2 is the safety net used for a local diploma. Level 4 fully meets expectations, and Level 5 meets them with distinction.

How many math Regents exams does my child need?

Under current rules, a Regents or local diploma needs three math credits and one passed math Regents exam or approved alternative. A Regents diploma with advanced designation needs three math Regents exams or approved alternatives.

How much does Regents math tutoring cost?

Plans start at $85 a month for two 45-minute lessons a week, with no contract. You can start with a free assessment, where the tutor checks your child's level against the New York Next Generation standards and suggests a plan.
