How it works, in short

TaleemSquare Smarter Balanced math tutoring is live, one-to-one online help for students taking the Smarter Balanced (SBAC) math test in grades 3 to 8 or high school. States such as California, Washington, Oregon, Hawaii, Idaho and Nevada use it. A tutor works on the standards your child finds hardest and practices both parts of the test.

The math test has a computer-adaptive part and a performance task, and neither is strictly timed. Scores fall into four levels, and Level 3 or 4 means your child met the standard. Plans start at $85 a month, with no contract.

What changes after a term of lessons

Worked solution of a linear equation on the shared lesson whiteboard
Lessons happen on a shared whiteboard, so your child solves while the tutor watches and guides (example lesson).

Solid on the tested standards

Fills gaps in the grade-level skills the test checks, from fractions and place value to ratios, equations and functions.

Ready for the performance task

Reads a multi-step, real-world problem, plans an approach and explains the reasoning in writing, the skills the performance task scores.

Calm with an adaptive test

Knows that questions adjust to each answer, so it works carefully, checks each step and does not rush.

What we cover

Lessons follow your child's own school or homeschool curriculum. These are the areas we work on most at this level.

Operations and algebraic thinking

The four operations, number patterns and word problems in the early grades, building toward expressions and equations.

Fractions and number sense

Place value, fraction equivalence and operations with fractions and decimals, a large part of the grades 3 to 5 tests.

Ratios and proportional reasoning

Ratios, rates, percents and proportional relationships, central to the grades 6 and 7 tests.

Expressions, equations and functions

Writing and solving equations and inequalities, linear relationships and early functions in grade 8 and high school.

Geometry and measurement

Area, volume, angles, the coordinate plane and transformations, matched to your child's grade.

Statistics and probability

Data displays, measures of center and variability, and simple probability in the middle school standards.

Explaining reasoning

Writing short explanations and showing work, which counts on the performance task and on some adaptive questions.

Signs your child could use help

  • Scored Level 1 or Level 2 on the last Smarter Balanced math test
  • Struggles with fractions, ratios or equations in class
  • Finds long, multi-step word problems hard
  • Knows the math but struggles to explain the reasoning
  • Is moving to a Smarter Balanced state from elsewhere
  • Needs more help than the school's test review offers

One of these on its own is normal. Two or three together usually point to a specific gap, and finding it is what the free assessment is for.

Taught to your curriculum, wherever you live

Smarter Balanced Assessment (Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium)

Member states give it each spring in grades 3 to 8 and one high school grade, often under their own names, such as CAASPP in California or OSAS in Oregon. Washington tests online from March 1 to June 25, 2027. Level 3 starts at 2436 in grade 3 and 2586 in grade 8.

For families moving from the UK

The test in grades 3 to 8 covers roughly Key Stage 2 and Key Stage 3 maths. We check your child's gaps against your state's standards rather than the UK curriculum, then practice both parts of the test.

Level: Key Stage 2 to Key Stage 4 maths

For families moving from Canada

Provincial math covers similar topics, but Smarter Balanced follows Common Core based state standards and adds a performance task. We map what your child learned to those standards and practice the format.

Level: Grades 3-11 math

For families moving from Australia

NAPLAN numeracy tests Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. Smarter Balanced tests every grade from 3 to 8 plus one high school grade, so we fill gaps against the state standards and practice the format.

Who teaches your child

Every TaleemSquare math tutor passes the same five checks before their first class. Your child keeps the same tutor each week, and if the fit is not right we switch tutor at no cost. Tutors are based in the US, UK, Canada, Australia, Pakistan and India, and all of them teach in English.

How we screen and match tutors
  • Identity and references checked

Every tutor is identity-verified and reference-checked before teaching a student.

  • Subject test

Tutors pass a subject test before they are matched with a child.

  • Spoken-English assessment

Lessons are taught in English, so every tutor passes a spoken-English assessment.

  • Live sample lesson

Tutors teach a live sample lesson before they are hired, to show they can explain clearly.

  • Open to parents

Classes are one-to-one in a password-protected room. Sit in on any class or ask for a recording.

How Smarter Balanced math lessons work

Start with a skills check

The first lesson finds which grade-level standards your child has secure and which need work, using test-style questions.

Teach, then practice both parts

Each skill is taught step by step, then practiced in adaptive-style questions and in a full performance task.

Build toward test day

Short practice sets grow into full sessions, and we use the free public practice tests as spring gets closer.

Updates for parents

You get a short note after every lesson on what was covered and what to practice next.

Common worries, honest answers

“My state calls the test something else. Is it the same test?”

Many states give Smarter Balanced under their own name, such as CAASPP in California, OSAS in Oregon or ISAT in Idaho. The math content and format come from Smarter Balanced, so the practice carries over.

“My child gets anxious about tests. Will this make it worse?”

We keep early practice calm and short, and build confidence by showing progress. Knowing the format well usually makes test day feel familiar instead of scary.

“The test is untimed. Why practice pacing?”

Untimed does not mean unlimited focus. Students who tire halfway make careless errors, so we build steady habits: read each question carefully, show the work and check answers before moving on.

Frequently asked questions

Which states use the Smarter Balanced math test?

Smarter Balanced lists California, Connecticut, Delaware, the District of Columbia, Hawaii, Idaho, Indiana, Michigan, Nevada, Oregon, South Dakota, Washington and the U.S. Virgin Islands as members. Each state gives the test under its own name and schedule, and some use only parts of the system.

What is on the Smarter Balanced math test?

There are two parts. The computer-adaptive part adjusts the difficulty of questions to each answer. The performance task gives a real-world problem with several connected questions, where students solve and explain their reasoning. Neither part has a strict time limit.

What Smarter Balanced math score meets the standard?

Scores fall in four levels, and Level 3 or 4 means the student met or exceeded the standard. Level 3 starts at 2436 in grade 3, 2485 in grade 4, 2528 in grade 5, 2552 in grade 6, 2567 in grade 7, 2586 in grade 8 and 2628 in grade 11.

When is the Smarter Balanced test in 2027?

Each state sets its own window. Washington lists March 1 to June 25, 2027 for online testing, Connecticut March 22 to May 28, 2027, and California districts choose windows between January 19 and June 30, 2027. Your school sets the exact days.

Are there free Smarter Balanced practice tests?

Yes. Smarter Balanced offers free public practice tests of about 30 questions, shorter training tests and a sample items site. Interim assessments and Tools for Teachers are for educators. We use the public materials alongside our own test-style practice.

How much does Smarter Balanced math tutoring cost?

Plans start at $85 a month for two 45-minute lessons a week, with no contract. You can start with a free assessment, where the tutor checks your child's level against your state's standards and suggests a plan.
