Short answer

If your 8th or 9th grader is failing Algebra 1, talk to the teacher, list the missing work, find the fraction, negative number and equation gaps behind the grade, and set a weekly routine. Free school help and Khan Academy cover small gaps. For bigger ones, plan on two to three live sessions a week: Wyzant tutors average $35 to $60 an hour, Mathnasium costs $449 to $579 a month at one center, and TaleemSquare one-to-one starts at $85 a month.

Key takeaways

  • Failing Algebra 1 usually comes from earlier gaps in fractions, negative numbers and equations, plus missing work, not from being bad at math.
  • Start with the teacher this week: ask for the grade breakdown, the missing assignments and the weakest topics.
  • Tutoring research finds three sessions a week helps more than one or two, so plan for at least two.
  • Online one-to-one costs about $9 to $11 per 45-minute lesson at TaleemSquare, while marketplace tutors average $35 to $60 an hour.

How we wrote this

TaleemSquare offers online one-to-one tutoring, so we compete with some of the services named here. Prices and policies come from the providers' own pages or the sources listed at the end, checked in October 2026. We say plainly where free or in-person help is the better fit.

A failing Algebra 1 grade is stressful, partly because it arrives at the point where math starts to decide course placement, graduation requirements and confidence. The good news is that the cause is usually specific and fixable.

This guide explains why students fail Algebra 1, gives you a step-by-step plan for the next few weeks, and compares the kinds of help with real US prices.

Why do students fail Algebra 1?

Algebra 1 asks a child to reason with unknowns, and it leans on skills from earlier grades. When those skills are shaky, each new unit sits on a weak base. The usual gaps are:

  • Fractions and division. Researchers led by Robert Siegler followed more than 4,000 children in the US and UK. Fifth graders' knowledge of fractions and division predicted algebra knowledge and math achievement in high school, even after accounting for IQ, family income and whole-number skills.
  • Negative numbers and signs. A dropped minus sign in step two ruins a correct method, and careful sign work is a habit that needs practice.
  • Equations. Some children read the equals sign as "the answer comes next" rather than "both sides balance," so multi-step equations fall apart.
  • Functions and graphs. Slope, tables, graphs and word problems all ask for the same idea in different clothes. Students who only memorized steps can struggle once the format changes.

Then add the non-math causes: missing homework, a pace that is too fast, test anxiety, and a few weeks of absence. A failing grade is often two or three gaps plus a stack of zeros, not a verdict on ability.

What should you do first if your child is failing Algebra 1?

Work through these steps in order.

  1. Talk to the teacher this week. Ask how the grade is calculated, which assignments are missing and whether they can be made up, which topics are weakest, and when the next test, retake or extra-help session is.
  2. Get the full picture. Check the parent portal. Is the grade low because of test scores, or because of zeros? A handful of missing assignments can pull a grade down faster than one bad quiz, and missing work is the quickest thing to fix.
  3. Find the earlier gaps. Have your child do ten fraction operations, ten problems with negative numbers and a few one- and two-step equations without a calculator. Wrong answers show where to go back. A tutor's assessment does the same with someone watching how your child thinks, and catch-up tutoring is built for this.
  4. Set a weekly routine. Aim for 20 to 30 minutes of practice on most days, at the same time, with the phone away. Add one help session, and check on Sunday what is due. Khan Academy is a free nonprofit platform covering K-12 math, so earlier-grade lessons on fractions and integers are there too.
  5. Add live help if the gap is bigger than your child can close alone. The next section compares the options.
  6. Ask about summer school or credit recovery early. If the semester grade is unlikely to reach passing, ask the counselor about retaking the course, summer school or online credit recovery, whether a D counts for graduation or for the next course, and the deadlines. Policies vary by district, and sign-up deadlines can come early.

Wyzant. Tutors set their own prices, and Wyzant says they average $35 to $60 an hour. Pricing is pay-as-you-go with no contracts, Wyzant adds a 9% service fee to each lesson, and your first hour with a new tutor is covered if you are not happy. At those rates, a 45-minute lesson costs roughly $26 to $45 before the fee, so eight lessons a month come to about $210 to $360 (our arithmetic).

Mathnasium. Prices are set by each center, so ask yours. The Glenview center lists $449 a month for two weekly sessions for PreK-8, $479 for grades 9-12, and $549 or $579 for unlimited sessions, with a $199 enrollment fee.

TaleemSquare. Lessons are live, one-to-one and 45 minutes, on an interactive whiteboard, following Common Core and your state's standards. The $85 plan is about $10.63 a lesson, and the $149 plan about $9.31. There is no registration fee and no long contract, tutor rematches are free, and parents get progress updates on WhatsApp. See algebra tutoring and pricing.

How many sessions a week does a failing Algebra 1 student need?

J-PAL's review of tutoring studies found that moving from one or two sessions a week to three benefits learning, and that most programs use sessions of 30 to 60 minutes.

For a student with a few gaps, two sessions a week is a sensible start. Choose three if the grade is failing badly, the gaps go back to fractions, or a final or state test is close. Once a week can be slow when a child is behind, because each new unit arrives before the last one is repaired.

Cost scales with sessions. At TaleemSquare, going from two lessons a week ($85) to three ($119) adds $34 a month. At Wyzant's average rates, three 45-minute lessons a week for a month is about 9 hours, or $315 to $540 before the fee (our arithmetic).

Add practice on the other days. A tutor can repair understanding, but only your child's own practice builds speed.

How fast should you expect your child to improve?

Be wary of anyone who promises a grade. A gap that took years to build rarely closes in a month.

A fair pattern: within the first few weeks your child finishes homework with less frustration, explains a step aloud and makes fewer sign errors. Quiz scores follow. The course grade moves last, because it averages the whole term, and a marking period is a reasonable checkpoint. Ask the tutor for two or three specific goals and a progress check at about four weeks.

If you see nothing after six to eight weeks, change something: the tutor, the frequency or the plan. TaleemSquare has a free tutor rematch and a 4-class promise: if your child is not more confident after the first 4 paid classes, you get a 100% refund of those classes (request within 14 days of the 4th class). That promise is about confidence, not grades.

What to do next

  1. Email the teacher this week and ask for the grade breakdown, the missing work and the weakest topics.
  2. Run the quick fractions, negative numbers and equations check from step 3. Small gaps point to school help and Khan Academy. Bigger gaps point to live tutoring two or three times a week.
  3. Book a free 45-minute math assessment with TaleemSquare. It is one-to-one and needs no card to book. Lessons follow your child's course, whether that is 8th grade math or 9th grade math Algebra 1.
  4. Ask the counselor about summer school and credit recovery deadlines now, in case you need them.

Frequently asked questions

Can a child recover from failing Algebra 1?

Yes, many do. A low grade in one marking period is not a verdict. Find the cause, such as missing work or gaps in fractions and equations, and fix that first. Retakes, summer school and credit recovery exist if the final grade still falls short.

Should my child retake Algebra 1?

Ask the school, because policies vary by district. Some allow credit recovery or summer school, while others require repeating the course. If the foundation is shaky, repairing it usually beats moving on to Geometry or Algebra 2 on a weak base.

How much does an Algebra 1 tutor cost?

Free school help and Khan Academy cost nothing. Wyzant tutors average $35 to $60 an hour plus a 9% fee, and one Mathnasium center lists $449 to $579 a month. TaleemSquare starts at $85 a month for two 45-minute lessons a week, about $10.63 each.

See all prices and plans

How many times a week should my child see an Algebra 1 tutor?

Two sessions a week is a sensible start, and three is better for a badly failing grade or big gaps. A review of tutoring studies by J-PAL found that moving from one or two sessions a week to three benefits learning.

Is online tutoring good for Algebra 1?

It works well when your child can focus for 45 minutes. A shared interactive whiteboard lets the tutor and your child write out equations step by step, which is how algebra is learned. Younger or easily distracted children may need a parent nearby at first.

How long until my child's grade improves?

Confidence and homework habits often change within a few weeks, but the course grade averages the whole term, so it moves more slowly. No tutor can promise a grade. A marking period is a fair checkpoint.
