What changes after a term of lessons

Worked solution of a linear equation on the shared lesson whiteboard
Lessons happen on a shared whiteboard, so your child solves while the tutor watches and guides (example lesson).

Confident with word problems

Reads each problem carefully, picks out what matters and turns it into a plan, since most Kangaroo questions are word problems.

Sharper logic and visual reasoning

Practices patterns, shapes, puzzles and step-by-step logic that go beyond regular classwork.

Steady over 75 minutes

Keeps focus through 24 or 30 questions, moving past hard ones and coming back, since wrong answers cost no points.

What we cover

Lessons follow your child's own school or homeschool curriculum. These are the areas we work on most at this level.

Word problems

Multi-step stories and puzzles, the main question style on Math Kangaroo.

Logic and reasoning

Ordering puzzles, true or false statements and organized thinking that rules out wrong choices.

Number sense and arithmetic

Mental math, place value and clever calculation, since calculators and smartphones are not allowed.

Shapes and spatial thinking

Picturing folds, cubes, views and shape patterns, practiced with drawings and simple models.

Patterns and sequences

Finding the rule in numbers and pictures, then using it to predict what comes next.

Counting

Organized lists and simple counting methods so no case is missed.

Grade-level extension

For older students, algebra, geometry and number theory problems at and above their grade.

Contest practice

Our own timed sets in the Kangaroo style, with 3, 4 and 5 point questions.

Signs your child could use help

  • Is registered or plans to register for Math Kangaroo 2027
  • Enjoys puzzles and wants more challenge than school gives
  • Rushes word problems and misses key details
  • Took Math Kangaroo before and wants a higher score
  • Gets tired or loses focus on long tests
  • Hopes to earn a state or national ranking

One of these on its own is normal. Two or three together usually point to a specific gap, and finding it is what the free assessment is for.

How we screen and match tutors
  • Identity and references checked

Every tutor is identity-verified and reference-checked before teaching a student.

  • Subject test

Tutors pass a subject test before they are matched with a child.

  • Spoken-English assessment

Lessons are taught in English, so every tutor passes a spoken-English assessment.

  • Live sample lesson

Tutors teach a live sample lesson before they are hired, to show they can explain clearly.

  • Open to parents

Classes are one-to-one in a password-protected room. Sit in on any class or ask for a recording.

Common worries, honest answers

“My child's school is not a Math Kangaroo center. What can we do?”

Students can register at a public center, which welcomes students from any school, or ask their school to host. Math Kangaroo asks students to register at a center in their own state. Private centers take only their own students, using an invitation code.

“My child is in kindergarten. Can they take part?”

Yes, if they can read and answer multiple-choice questions on their own. Kindergarten students take the grade 1 test. For young children we keep lessons short and game-like, with picture puzzles.

“Do you use past Math Kangaroo tests?”

Lessons use our own Kangaroo-style problems and focus on reasoning, not memorized answers. Math Kangaroo USA gives registered students free access to video solutions for past competitions, and we can help your child use them well.
