M-STEP math, Michigan's four math credits and Detroit exam school testing
- Detroit students in grades 3 to 7 take the M-STEP mathematics test, which is computer adaptive. Michigan's 2027 M-STEP online window runs April 5 to May 14, 2027, and the paper window runs April 5 to April 30. Grade 8 students take the PSAT 8/9, which counts toward Michigan's math accountability.
- The Michigan Merit Curriculum requires four math credits, including Algebra I, Geometry and Algebra II or an integrated sequence, plus a math or math-related course in the final year. Algebra II may be spread over two years. Grade 11 students take the SAT for the Michigan Merit Examination, and from spring 2027 it no longer includes the Essay.
- DPSCD's five examination high schools require the High School Placement Test (HSPT), which has a mathematics section where calculators are not permitted. For 9th grade applicants, the total score combines the HSPT score, GPA and an interest essay. DPSCD 8th graders test November 10 to 13, 2026, and applications close November 15, 2026.
A one-to-one online tutor can follow DPSCD's Eureka Math and CPM lessons, rebuild skills for M-STEP and the PSAT 8/9, and practice no-calculator HSPT math before exam school testing.
