PSSA and Keystone Algebra I dates and Pittsburgh's three math units

  • Pittsburgh Public Schools' 2026-27 assessment calendar sets PSSA math for grades 3 to 8 on May 3 to 7, 2027, one week after PSSA English language arts on April 26 to 30. Students in grades 3 through high school also take the Classroom Diagnostic Tools in math in September, December and February to March.
  • Keystone Algebra I is given January 4 to 15, 2027 for retesters and semester courses, and May 17 to 28, 2027 for enrolled students. Under Pennsylvania's Act 158, students meet the state graduation requirement through one of five pathways: Keystone Proficiency, Keystone Composite, CTE Concentrator, Alternative Assessment or Evidence-Based.
  • PPS Board Policy 211 requires three math units, one each of Algebra I, Geometry and Algebra II. Starting with the class of 2028, students need 24.5 total credits to graduate. The district's high school math courses run from Algebra 1 through AP Precalculus, AP Calculus AB and BC, and AP Statistics.

A one-to-one online tutor can prepare students for PSSA math in May, reteach Algebra I before the January or May Keystone, and support Geometry and Algebra II to meet Policy 211.

Math tutoring in Pittsburgh: questions

Are your math tutors based in Pittsburgh?

No. TaleemSquare tutors teach online, so Pittsburgh families get one-to-one math lessons without travelling to a center. Lessons are scheduled in Eastern Time and follow the Pennsylvania curriculum your child uses at school.

Do you follow the Pennsylvania math curriculum?

Yes. Tutors align lessons with the Pennsylvania Core Standards for Mathematics and with your child's own school work. Share homework, worksheets or the topic list and the tutor will match it.

Can you help my child prepare for PSSA math tests?

Yes. Local tests include: PSSA math tests in Grades 3-8 and the Keystone Algebra I exam. Tutors build the underlying math skills first, then practise questions in the right format as the test approaches.

How much does a math tutor in Pittsburgh cost?

TaleemSquare plans start at $85 a month for two 45-minute one-to-one lessons a week, about $10.63 a lesson. Three lessons a week cost $119 and four cost $149. There is no contract, and the first assessment is free.

What times are lessons available in Pittsburgh?

Lessons are scheduled in Eastern Time, usually after school on weekdays or at weekends. Your child keeps the same tutor and weekly slots, which you agree after the free assessment.

Does my Pittsburgh student need to pass the Keystone Algebra I exam to graduate?

Not necessarily. PPS told families that, starting with the class of 2023, Act 158 offers five pathways to meet Pennsylvania's graduation requirement, so Keystone proficiency is only one route. Students must still take the Keystone exams for federal accountability, and they still need the three PPS math units: Algebra I, Geometry and Algebra II.
