Short answer
There is no single best option, because it depends on your child's year group and how you want to pay. As of October 2026, MyTutor (from £26 an hour), Tutorful (averages of £33 to £36) and Sherpa (from £20) let you choose a tutor and pay per lesson. GoStudent, Explore Learning (£159 to £259 a month one-to-one) and National Learning Group (£39.90 per 40 minutes) are managed services. TaleemSquare is £69 a month for two 45-minute lessons a week.
Key takeaways
- Marketplaces (MyTutor, Tutorful, Sherpa, Superprof) let you choose the tutor and pay per lesson, from about £20 to £26 an hour.
- Managed services (GoStudent, Explore Learning, NLG, TaleemSquare) bill monthly or weekly; GoStudent's price examples assume a 12-month membership.
- Lessons run 40, 45, 50 or 60 minutes, so compare the cost of an hour of teaching, not the price of a lesson.
- Match the provider to the need: primary catch-up, SATs, the 11+ and GCSE each favour different options.

How we wrote this
TaleemSquare offers online one-to-one tutoring, so we compete with several providers named here and are listed as one of them. Prices and policies come from each provider's own pages or the sources listed at the end, checked in October 2026.
Search for an online maths tutor in the UK and you meet two kinds of business. Marketplaces such as MyTutor and Tutorful list individual tutors who set their own prices. Managed services such as GoStudent, Explore Learning and National Learning Group (NLG) assign a tutor and bill you on a plan.
No single provider is best for every child. A Year 4 pupil who has lost confidence with fractions, a Year 6 pupil facing SATs and a Year 11 pupil chasing a grade 7 need different things. This guide compares eight providers on format, price, commitment and levels, then recommends by situation. Prices are as of October 2026 and change often, so confirm them before you pay.
How do the main UK online maths tutoring providers compare?
The table shows what each provider publishes. Where a provider has no price list, the figure is the range or average it states itself.
| Provider | Format | Levels | Published price | About 8 lessons a month | Commitment | Suits |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| MyTutor | Marketplace, you choose the tutor, hourly lessons | KS2 to A-level | From £26 an hour (tiers £25+, £45+, £65+) | About £208 at £26 | Pay as you go, free 15-minute meeting | Parents who want to meet the tutor first |
| Tutorful | Marketplace, tutors set their own rates | Primary to A-level, 11+ | Averages an hour: primary £33.01, KS3 £34.47, GCSE £35.86 | About £264 to £287 | Pay per lesson | Parents who want to compare many tutors |
| GoStudent | Matched tutor, 50-minute lessons, monthly package | KS1 to A-level, SATs, 11+ | £22.71 to £30.97 a lesson (base £24.99) | 4 a month about £124, 12 a month about £322 | Price examples assume a 12-month membership | Families who want a matched tutor on a long plan |
| Explore Learning (online) | One-to-one online, monthly membership | Ages 4 to 16: maths, SATs, 11 Plus, GCSE maths | £37 a session once a week, £30 twice a week | £259 | Monthly Direct Debit, no joining fee | Younger children who like routine |
| NLG | Managed one-to-one, 40-minute lessons | Early Years to A-level, SEND, 11 Plus | From £39.90 a lesson (about £59.85 an hour) | About £319 | Billed weekly, 4 weeks' written notice | Parents who want a managed service, including SEND |
| Sherpa | Marketplace, you choose the tutor | Primary to A-level | £20 to £70 an hour for KS3 maths | £160 to £560 (about £240 at £30) | Free online introduction, no minimum term stated | Parents who want a qualified teacher |
| Superprof | Directory of tutors, online or in person | Wide range of subjects | Tutors set rates; £39 a month Student Pass to message them | Tutor rate plus the £39 pass | Pass renews every 30 days, cancel any time | Parents who also want local, in-person options |
| TaleemSquare | Managed one-to-one, 45-minute lessons | Primary to GCSE, UK curriculum | £69, £95 or £119 a month for 2, 3 or 4 lessons a week | £69 | Monthly, cancel any time, free assessment first | Families who want weekly one-to-one lessons at a fixed price |
To compare fairly, convert everything to an hourly figure. TaleemSquare's £69 buys eight 45-minute lessons, which is 6 hours of teaching, or £11.50 an hour. GoStudent's lessons are 50 minutes, so its £24.99 base price is £29.99 an hour, and NLG's £39.90 for 40 minutes is £59.85 an hour. Explore does not state session length on its pricing page, so we treat a session as about an hour.
Two caveats. Tutorful's averages come from a guide published in 2024 and updated in March 2025, so treat them as a guide, not a quote. Superprof's terms say you pay £39 a month to message tutors and pay lessons separately, while Tutorful's terms define the lesson price as the tutor's fee plus a service fee.
What does each provider do well?
- MyTutor: a free 15-minute meeting before you pay, and tutors who are personally interviewed and onboarded.
- Tutorful: tutors from primary to A-level and 11+ on one site, so one account can serve siblings of different ages.
- GoStudent: a free, non-binding trial lesson with no card, and tutor matching by personality, level and goals.
- Explore Learning: a free online trial, no joining fee, and £10 off for a second child and £20 off for a third.
- NLG: published prices for primary, GCSE, A-level and SEND (from £46 and £43.90 a lesson at the last two), and cheaper group GCSE maths.
- Sherpa: a wide price range, from £20 to £70 an hour, with qualified teachers and examiners available, and a free online introduction.
- Superprof: the widest mix of subjects and in-person options, and its terms require new tutors to offer a free first lesson.
- TaleemSquare: a fixed monthly price, a free assessment with no card, a refund if your child is not more confident after the first four paid classes, and a free tutor rematch. It was founded in 2023, so it is newer than most names here, and it matches a tutor to your child instead of working as a marketplace.
Which is best for primary catch-up (Years 3 to 6)?
A child who has fallen behind in primary usually needs short, regular lessons with one person who can spot the gap. Explore Learning is built for this age group: ages 4 to 16, a free online trial, and one-to-one online membership at £159 a month for one session a week or £259 for two. Its group sessions in centres cost less (£124 to £159 a month) but share one tutor between up to six children.
MyTutor and Tutorful suit parents who want to pick a teacher with primary experience. TaleemSquare costs £69 a month for two 45-minute lessons a week, with a free assessment first; our KS2 maths tutoring page explains how lessons follow the National Curriculum.
Which is best for Year 6 SATs?
KS2 SATs are sat in May of Year 6, so most families look for help from the autumn. Explore Learning has a SATs course at the same prices as its maths and English plans: £124 or £159 a month in a group, £159 or £259 one-to-one. NLG covers SATs within its Years 3 to 6 tutoring at £39.90 per 40-minute lesson, billed weekly.
On a marketplace, ask each tutor about KS2 experience during the free meeting or introduction, and whether they will work through past papers. TaleemSquare lessons follow the National Curriculum content the SATs test; our Year 6 maths tutoring page covers what is taught.
Which is best for the 11+?
In many areas the 11+ tests more than maths, such as English, verbal reasoning and non-verbal reasoning, and formats differ by region. A specialist 11+ firm can suit better than a general maths tutor, and our 11+ tutor cost guide lists their prices.
Among the eight providers here, Explore Learning has a dedicated 11 Plus and Entrance Exams course: £190 a month for two group sessions a week, or £180 and £280 a month one-to-one (once and twice a week). Tutorful's guide puts 11+ tutors at about £41.12 an hour. For the maths part, TaleemSquare (from £69 a month) can sit alongside a reasoning platform; see our 11+ maths tutoring page.
Which is best for GCSE maths?
GCSE students usually want exam-board knowledge and a tutor who can stretch them or rescue a grade. Marketplaces give you the most control: Tutorful's average GCSE rate is £35.86 an hour and MyTutor starts at £26. Sherpa lists examiners from £35 an hour on its KS3 maths page, so ask whether a tutor has marked GCSE papers.
If you prefer a managed plan, Explore's GCSE Maths is £170 or £270 a month one-to-one (once or twice a week), or £134 or £174 in a group. NLG runs GCSE maths groups of up to 8 pupils at £20 a weekly 60-minute lesson, falling to £16 with an eligible block. TaleemSquare costs £95 or £119 a month for three or four lessons a week; see our GCSE maths tutoring page.
Which is best on a tight budget?
The lowest hourly prices come from marketplaces. Sherpa quotes tutors from £20 an hour and MyTutor from £26, though experience raises prices quickly (MyTutor's top tier starts at £65). Group formats cost less per session but share the tutor: Explore's group sessions work out at £18 each on two sessions a week, and NLG's GCSE maths groups are £16 to £20 a lesson.
For one-to-one lessons at a fixed monthly price, TaleemSquare's £69 for eight lessons is about £11.50 an hour. The trade-off is lesson length: 45 minutes, against 50 to 60 minutes at several competitors. Two lessons a week still gives 90 minutes of teaching, with no contract.
What should you check before you pay?
- Lesson length: 40, 45, 50 and 60 minutes are all common, so work out the price of an hour.
- Commitment: GoStudent's examples assume 12 months and NLG needs 4 weeks' written notice. Ask what ending early costs.
- Who chooses the tutor: a marketplace gives control but you do the vetting; a managed service matches for you.
- Safeguarding: NLG says its tutors are DBS checked, Sherpa says many are, and Superprof's terms leave verification to parents. Ask for each provider's checks in writing.
- Trial terms: compare free meetings, introductions and trial lessons before paying for a first lesson.
