- MSTAR mathematics in grades 3 to 8 from spring 2027, replacing MCAP; high school Algebra I, Geometry and Algebra II assessments, which MSDE is phasing out for MSTAR Integrated Math assessments
- Worth knowing in Maryland
- Maryland students who entered grade 9 in 2021-22 or later need 4 math credits, including algebra and geometry, and must enroll in a math course every year of high school.
Baltimore City Public Schools enrolled 76,362 students in the 2025-26 school year across 159 schools and programs.

MSTAR replaces MCAP, Maryland's math credits and Baltimore high school choice
- Maryland is replacing MCAP with MSTAR. Starting with the spring 2027 testing window, Baltimore students in grades 3 to 8 take the MSTAR math test, which is adaptive. MSDE says the 2025-26 MCAP was the fifth and final full administration, so 2027 scores will come from a new test.
- Maryland students who entered grade 9 in 2021-22 or later need 4 math credits among 22 total credits. One credit must include algebra aligned with the state algebra assessment, and one must include geometry. State rules also require every student to enroll in a math course in each year of high school.
- City Schools' 2026-27 Choice Guide set a 610 minimum composite for Poly, City College, Dunbar and Western, using 7th grade core grades, including math, and MCAP scores. Poly's Ingenuity Project requires Algebra 1 in middle school and an Algebra 1 exam. For 2027-28 entry, 8th graders apply December 1, 2026 to January 15, 2027.
A one-to-one online tutor can prepare students for the new MSTAR math test, strengthen Algebra I before the state algebra assessment, and lift the 7th grade math grades used in the high school choice composite.
