Grade 5 · 15-question math test
Can you pass a 5th grade math test?
8:04 video · Watch on YouTube
A 5th grade math test covers decimals (rounding, comparing, adding and multiplying), fractions with different denominators, order of operations, measurement and volume. This one has 15 questions that get harder level by level, and each answer is explained on the whiteboard.
Score one point for each right answer. 10 or more means your child passed 5th grade math; all 15 means math genius. The fraction levels (6, 12, 13 and 14) are the ones most children miss.
The question, solved step by step
15 real 5th grade math questions, from easy to impossible, with a few seconds on the timer for each.
- Level 1: 25 × 4. Answer: 100 (four quarters make a dollar)
- Level 2: Round 3.67. Answer: 3.7 (the hundredths digit is 7, so round up)
- Level 3: 0.5 or 0.45. Answer: 0.5 (0.50 beats 0.45)
- Level 4: 3.2 × 100. Answer: 320 (every digit moves two places left)
- Level 5: 4.5 + 2.75. Answer: 7.25 (line up the decimal points)
- Level 6: 1/2 + 1/3. Answer: 5/6 (3/6 + 2/6)
- Level 7: 0.6 × 0.5. Answer: 0.3 (half of 0.6)
- Level 8: 8 + 2 × 5. Answer: 18 (multiply before you add)
- Level 9: 3/4 of 20. Answer: 15 (one fourth of 20 is 5, three of them is 15)
- Level 10: Meters to centimeters. Answer: 250 cm (1 meter is 100 cm)
- Level 11: Volume of a box. Answer: 60 cubic cm (12 cubes per layer, 5 layers)
- Level 12: 6 × 3/4 cup. Answer: 4 1/2 cups (18 fourths)
- Level 13: Dividing by 1/4. Answer: 12 scoops (dividing by 1/4 is multiplying by 4)
- Level 14: Fraction of a book left. Answer: 4/15 (6/15 + 5/15 = 11/15 read)
- Level 15: Final boss: 20 − 3 × (4 + 2) ÷ 2. Answer: 11 (parentheses, then times and divide left to right, then minus)
Answer
10 or more right: you passed 5th grade. All 15: math genius.
The common mistake
Adding the tops and the bottoms of fractions: 1/2 + 1/3 is not 2/5. The pieces must be the same size first, so 1/2 + 1/3 = 3/6 + 2/6 = 5/6.
Parent tip
If the fraction questions were tricky, that is normal. Unlike denominators are the hardest part of 5th grade. Practice making the pieces the same size (sixths, fifteenths) before adding or subtracting.

0:00Can you pass a fifth grade math test? Fifteen questions, from easy to impossible!
0:06Parents, play along with your child and keep score. Grab a pen and paper! One point for every right answer. Ready? Let's go!
0:15Level one. What is twenty-five times four?
0:24B, one hundred! Think of quarters. Four quarters make one dollar, and one dollar is one hundred cents. Give yourself a point!
0:33Level two. Round three point six seven to the nearest tenth.
0:43Three point seven! Look at the hundredths digit. It's a seven, and seven is five or more, so we round up. Three point six seven becomes three point seven.
0:54Level three. Which number is bigger? Zero point five, or zero point four five?
1:06Max says zero point four five, because forty-five is bigger than five. Hmm, not quite! Add a zero. Zero point five is zero point five zero. Fifty hundredths beats forty-five hundredths, just like fifty cents beats forty-five cents. The answer is A!
1:25Level four. What is three point two times one hundred?
1:35Max says three point two zero zero. Not quite! Zeros at the end of a decimal don't change it. Times one hundred, every digit moves two places to the left. Three point two becomes three hundred twenty. The answer is A!
1:51Level five. Now it gets harder! What is four point five plus two point seven five?
2:04Line up the decimal points! Four point five is the same as four point five zero. Add the hundredths, then the tenths, then the ones. Four point five zero plus two point seven five is seven point two five. The answer is C!
2:20Level six. What is one half plus one third?
2:30Max says two fifths. Nope! We can't add the tops and the bottoms. First, make the pieces the same size. One half is three sixths. One third is two sixths. Three sixths plus two sixths is five sixths!
2:45Level seven. What is zero point six times zero point five?
2:57Times zero point five means half of it. Half of zero point six is zero point three. Check it: six times five is thirty, and two decimal places make zero point three zero. The answer is C!
3:11Level eight. This one starts arguments online! What is eight plus two times five?
3:23Max says fifty. So do lots of grown-ups! But we multiply before we add. Two times five is ten. Eight plus ten is eighteen. The answer is B!
3:35More than halfway there! How many points do you have? Tell us in the comments. And if you like this test, subscribe!
3:43Level nine. Hard! What is three fourths of twenty?
3:55Find one fourth first. Twenty divided by four is five. Three fourths is three of those fives. Five times three is fifteen. The answer is A!
4:06Level ten. How many centimeters are in two point five meters?
4:18Max says twenty-five. Close, but no! One meter is one hundred centimeters. So two point five meters is two point five times one hundred. That's two hundred fifty centimeters! The answer is C!
4:33Level eleven. A box is four centimeters long, three wide, and five tall. What is its volume?
4:48Max adds them up. Four plus three plus five is twelve. Not quite! Volume is how many cubes fit inside. The bottom layer is four by three, so twelve cubes. There are five layers. Twelve times five is sixty cubic centimeters!
5:05Level twelve. Very hard! A pizza needs three fourths of a cup of cheese. How much cheese do you need for six pizzas?
5:23Six groups of three fourths. Six times three is eighteen, so that's eighteen fourths. Four fourths make one cup. Eighteen fourths is four whole cups, with two fourths left over. That's four and a half cups!
5:37Level thirteen. How many one fourth cup scoops are in three cups of rice?
5:52Max says three fourths. Lots of people do! But each cup holds four scoops. Three cups, times four scoops, is twelve scoops! Dividing by one fourth is the same as multiplying by four.
6:05Level fourteen. Impossible! Mia reads two fifths of a book on Monday, and one third of it on Tuesday. What fraction of the book is left?
6:27Use fifteenths, because five and three both go into fifteen. Two fifths is six fifteenths. One third is five fifteenths. Together, that's eleven fifteenths. The whole book is fifteen fifteenths, so four fifteenths are left. The answer is C!
6:44Level fifteen. The final boss! Look at the board. Parentheses, times, divide and minus, all in one!
7:04Max says fifty-one. Ouch! Parentheses come first. Four plus two is six. Then times and divide, from left to right. Three times six is eighteen, and eighteen divided by two is nine. Last, twenty minus nine is eleven. The answer is B!
7:23How did you do? Ten or more, you passed fifth grade! All fifteen, you're a math genius! Under ten? Watch the tricky ones again, and you'll get them next time. Tell us your score in the comments!
7:36Parents, if the fraction questions were tricky, that's normal. Fractions with different denominators are the hardest part of fifth grade. Practice making the pieces the same size.
