  14. Level 14 (Grade 7): 20% off a $60 shirt. Answer: $48 (10% is $6, 20% is $12, 60 − 12)
  15. Level 15 (Grade 8): √49 + √16. Answer: 11 (7 + 4)
  16. Level 16 (Grade 8): 3x + 5 = 20. Answer: x = 5 (subtract 5, then divide by 3)

Answer

10 or more right: you passed. 14 or more: ready for high school math. All 16: math genius.

The common mistake

Reading 2 to the power of 3 as 2 × 3 = 6. An exponent means repeated multiplication: 2³ = 2 × 2 × 2 = 8.

0:00Can you pass this math quiz? Sixteen questions, from first grade all the way to eighth grade!

0:06Parents, play along with your child and keep score. Grab a pen and paper! One point for every right answer. Ready? Let's go!

0:15Level one. First grade! What is seven plus eight?

0:26B, fifteen! Make a ten. Take three from the eight and give them to the seven. Seven plus three is ten, and ten plus five is fifteen. Give yourself a point!

0:38Level two. What is fifteen minus nine?

0:48Six! Count up from nine. Nine plus one is ten, and ten plus five is fifteen. One plus five is six.

0:57Level three. Second grade! What is forty-six plus thirty-eight?

1:08Max says seventy-four. Not quite! Add the ones first. Six plus eight is fourteen. Write the four and carry the one ten. Then four tens, plus three tens, plus one more ten, is eight tens. Eighty-four! The answer is B!

1:25Level four. What is one hundred minus thirty-seven?

1:35Max says seventy-three. Close, but no! Count up from thirty-seven. Three more makes forty. Sixty more makes one hundred. Three plus sixty is sixty-three. The answer is A!

1:48Level five. Third grade! What is seven times eight?

2:00Max says fifty-four. Nope! Here's a trick. Five, six, seven, eight. Fifty-six is seven times eight! Seven rows of eight make fifty-six. The answer is B!

2:13Level six. Which is bigger? One half, or one third?

2:25Max says one third, because three is bigger than two. Not quite! The bottom number tells you how many pieces. More pieces means smaller pieces. So one half is bigger! The answer is B.

2:39Level seven. Fourth grade! What is nine times twelve?

2:51Use ten twelves. Ten times twelve is one hundred twenty. Nine twelves is one twelve less. One hundred twenty minus twelve is one hundred eight. The answer is B!

3:04Level eight. Three fourths is how many eighths?

3:15Max says three eighths. Nope! Cut every fourth into two pieces. Four pieces become eight, and three pieces become six. Three fourths is six eighths! The answer is A.

3:35Level nine. Fifth grade! What is two point five times four?

3:49Think of money. Two dollars fifty, four times. Two fifty plus two fifty is five dollars. Five plus five is ten. Ten dollars! The answer is B.

4:01Level ten. Look at the board. Parentheses, times and minus!

4:15Max says nine. He forgot the parentheses! Parentheses come first. Three plus five is eight. Eight times two is sixteen. Sixteen minus four is twelve. The answer is A!

4:28Level eleven. Sixth grade! What is twenty-five percent of eighty?

4:42Max says twenty-five. Nope! Twenty-five percent is one fourth. Split eighty into four equal parts. Each part is twenty. The answer is B!

4:53Level twelve. What is two to the power of three?

5:05Max says six. That's two times three. Not quite! Two to the power of three means two times two times two. Two times two is four, and four times two is eight. It's a cube of eight blocks! The answer is B.

5:20Level thirteen. Seventh grade! What is negative three plus eight?

5:35Max says negative eleven. Not quite! Start at negative three on the number line and jump eight to the right. Three jumps get you to zero, and five more get you to five. The answer is B!

5:49Level fourteen. A sixty dollar shirt is twenty percent off. What do you pay?

6:04Max says forty dollars. Close, but no! Ten percent of sixty is six. Twenty percent is twelve. You save twelve dollars, so you pay sixty minus twelve. Forty-eight dollars! The answer is B.

6:19Level fifteen. Eighth grade! What is the square root of forty-nine, plus the square root of sixteen?

6:37Max says sixty-five. Ouch! A square root asks: what number times itself makes this? Seven times seven is forty-nine. Four times four is sixteen. Seven plus four is eleven. The answer is B!

6:53Level sixteen. The final boss! Solve for x. Three x plus five equals twenty.

7:11Max says fifteen. He stopped too early! Undo the plus five first. Twenty minus five is fifteen, so three x is fifteen. Now undo the times three. Fifteen divided by three is five. x equals five! The answer is A.

7:29How did you do? Ten or more, you passed! Fourteen or more, you're ready for high school math! All sixteen, you're a math genius! Tell us your score in the comments!

Questions parents ask

What grades does this math quiz cover?

Grades 1 to 8, two questions per grade (UK Year 2 to Year 9, Canada Grade 1 to 8, Australia Year 1 to 8 and UAE Grade 1 to 8 cover the same skills). The questions follow US Common Core and Texas TEKS skills.

What score means my child passed?

10 or more out of 16 is a pass, 14 or more means ready for high school math, and all 16 is a perfect score. Look at the first level your child missed: that is the skill to practice next.

Why is 2 to the power of 3 equal to 8 and not 6?

The power tells you how many times to multiply the number by itself: 2 × 2 × 2 = 8. Multiplying 2 × 3 = 6 is the most common mistake.

How do you work out 20% off a $60 shirt?

Find 10% first: $6. Double it for 20%: $12. Then subtract: $60 − $12 = $48.
