How it works, in short

TaleemSquare EQAO math tutoring is live, one-to-one online math for Ontario students before the Grade 3 and Grade 6 assessments and the Grade 9 Assessment of Mathematics. Tutors follow the Ontario math curriculum and work on the skills behind a result, such as number sense, fractions, algebra and data, rather than drilling practice tests.

In 2026-27 the Grade 3 and 6 assessments run from May 4 to June 8, 2027, and from this school year the Grade 9 math assessment counts for 20% of the MTH1W final mark. Plans are C$115 a month for two 45-minute lessons a week, after a free assessment.

What changes after a term of lessons

Worked solution of a linear equation on the shared lesson whiteboard
Lessons happen on a shared whiteboard, so your child solves while the tutor watches and guides (example lesson).

Solid on the grade's math

Works confidently with the number, algebra, data and spatial sense skills the Ontario curriculum sets for the grade.

Ready for the online format

Has tried EQAO's sample tests, so the screens, question types and tools feel familiar on the day.

Grade 9 course on track

For MTH1W students, keeps up with the course topics that both the assessment and the final mark draw on.

What we cover

Lessons follow your child's own school or homeschool curriculum. These are the areas we work on most at this level.

Number sense

Whole numbers, place value, fractions, decimals and percents at your child's grade level, the base of most math questions.

Algebra and coding

Patterns, equations and inequalities, plus the coding expectations the 2020 Ontario curriculum includes in its algebra strand.

Data and probability

Collecting, graphing and reading data, and probability, which run through the data strand in every elementary grade.

Spatial sense

Geometry and measurement, from shapes, area and angles in the early grades to volume and surface area later on.

Financial literacy

Money in the early grades and financial decisions in later grades, a strand of its own in the 2020 Ontario curriculum.

Grade 9 MTH1W topics

Number, algebra and linear relations, data, geometry and measurement, and financial literacy from the destreamed Grade 9 course.

Questions set in context

Reading what a question asks and choosing a strategy, since many math questions are set in a short real-life situation.

One typical question, worked through

How a tutor talks a student through a math question at this level. The student does the working on the shared whiteboard; the tutor asks the next question.

A class of 24 students voted on a field trip, and 3/8 of them chose the science museum. How many students chose the museum?

  1. 3/8 means 3 out of every 8 equal parts, so first find 1/8 of 24: 24 ÷ 8 = 3.
  2. Three eighths is three of those parts: 3 × 3 = 9.
  3. Check: 9 out of 24 simplifies to 3/8, because 9 ÷ 3 = 3 and 24 ÷ 3 = 8.

Answer: 9 students

The slip we see most often

Stopping at 1/8 and answering 3, or mixing up the top and bottom numbers and working out 24 ÷ 3 × 8 = 64, more students than the class has. Saying the fraction out loud as 3 out of every 8 helps a child pick the right order.

Signs your child could use help

  • Report card or EQAO result shows math below the provincial standard
  • Struggles with fractions or multiplication facts in Grades 3 to 6
  • Worried about the Grade 9 math assessment and the final mark
  • Finds the destreamed Grade 9 math course fast or confusing
  • Gets anxious about tests written on a computer
  • Teacher says math is a gap to work on this year

One of these on its own is normal. Two or three together usually point to a specific gap, and finding it is what the free assessment is for.

Taught to your curriculum, wherever you live

Common Core and state tests

US states test math every year from grade 3 to grade 8, much as EQAO checks Ontario students in Grades 3, 6 and 9. The content overlaps closely: number sense, fractions, early algebra, geometry and data.

Level: Grades 3, 6 and 9

National curriculum and Key Stage 2 SATs

England has no test like the Grade 9 assessment. Its national primary maths test is the Key Stage 2 SATs at the end of Year 6, taken at about the age of Ontario's Grade 5 and 6 students.

Level: Years 4, 7 and 10

Ontario math curriculum and EQAO

EQAO assesses Ontario students in reading, writing and math in Grade 3 and Grade 6, and in math in Grade 9. Grade 3 and 6 results do not affect report cards, while the Grade 9 assessment counts for 20% of the MTH1W final mark from 2026-27.

NAPLAN numeracy

Australia's NAPLAN tests numeracy in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9, the closest match to EQAO. Both are written online, both report results in levels, and they cover similar number, algebra, measurement and data skills.

Who teaches your child

Every TaleemSquare math tutor passes the same five checks before their first class. Your child keeps the same tutor each week, and if the fit is not right we switch tutor at no cost. Tutors are based in the US, UK, Canada, Australia, Pakistan and India, and all of them teach in English.

How we screen and match tutors
  • Identity and references checked

Every tutor is identity-verified and reference-checked before teaching a student.

  • Subject test

Tutors pass a subject test before they are matched with a child.

  • Spoken-English assessment

Lessons are taught in English, so every tutor passes a spoken-English assessment.

  • Live sample lesson

Tutors teach a live sample lesson before they are hired, to show they can explain clearly.

  • Open to parents

Classes are one-to-one in a password-protected room. Sit in on any class or ask for a recording.

How we prepare students for EQAO math

Curriculum first

Lessons follow the Ontario curriculum for your child's grade, because steady skill-building is what moves an EQAO result.

Gaps from earlier grades

The free assessment checks skills from the grades before, since a Grade 6 struggle often starts with Grade 3 or 4 fractions.

Format practice, kept short

Near the window, students try EQAO's sample questions so the online format holds no surprises, without weeks of test drilling.

Updates for parents

You get a WhatsApp note after every lesson, and the tutor can go through your child's EQAO Individual Student Report with you.

Common worries, honest answers

“My child gets nervous about EQAO.”

Tutors keep the focus on skills, not the test. A couple of short practice sessions with EQAO's sample questions near the window are usually enough to make the format feel familiar.

“Do online tutors outside Ontario know the Ontario curriculum?”

Tutors work from the Ontario curriculum documents and your child's own school work, and lessons run in your time zone. The free assessment lets you judge the teaching yourself before you pay anything.

“Does the Grade 9 assessment really count toward the mark?”

Yes. From 2026-27 it counts for 20% of the MTH1W final mark, so steady work on the course through the semester matters more than last-minute drilling.

Frequently asked questions

What does the EQAO math assessment test?

In Grades 3 and 6, EQAO assesses reading, writing and math based on the Ontario curriculum up to that grade. The Grade 9 Assessment of Mathematics covers the Grade 9 math course, MTH1W. All of them are written online at school within windows set by EQAO, and each school chooses its exact dates.

When are the EQAO math assessments in 2026-2027?

The Grade 3 and Grade 6 assessments run from May 4 to June 8, 2027. The Grade 9 math assessment has two windows, January 12 to February 5, 2027 and June 8 to 30, 2027, depending on when your child takes MTH1W. Our EQAO dates page lists every window, including the OSSLT.

Do EQAO results count on the report card?

Not in Grades 3 and 6: EQAO says those results do not affect report card grades. The Grade 9 Assessment of Mathematics is different, because from 2026-27 it counts for 20% of the final mark in MTH1W. Results for the Grade 3 and 6 assessments are reported by the end of September 2027.

How can I help my child prepare for EQAO math?

Keep math steady through the year rather than cramming: regular practice of number facts, fractions and the topics on the report card. Near the window, try EQAO's sample tests together so the online format is familiar. If a report card or teacher points to a gap, one-to-one help on that skill is usually the most useful step.

What is the provincial standard on EQAO?

EQAO reports results in four levels. Level 3 is the provincial standard and Level 4 is above it, while Levels 1 and 2 are below it. A Level 1 or 2 in math is a signal to find out which skills are missing, which is what our free assessment does.

How much does EQAO math tutoring cost?

One-to-one EQAO math tutoring costs C$115 a month for two 45-minute lessons a week, C$159 for three or C$199 for four, billed monthly with no contract or registration fee. The first assessment is free, and we refund the first 4 paid classes if your child is not more confident.
