A steady EQAO plan for 2026-2027

A steady plan beats a last-minute rush. If your child wants a tutor alongside it, our EQAO math tutoring starts with a free assessment and costs from C$115 a month.

  1. October to December 2026

Grade 9: ask the school which math window your child will write in, and check which MTH1W topics need work.

  2. Before the winter window

Try EQAO's sample tests so the online format feels familiar. EQAO says no special preparation is required.

  3. January 12 to February 5, 2027

Winter Grade 9 math window. It counts for 20% of the MTH1W final mark, so review weak topics but keep routines normal.

  4. March to April 2027

OSSLT spring window, March 30 to April 19. Grade 3 and 6 families: keep reading and math practice steady before May.

  5. May 4 to June 30, 2027

Grade 3 and 6 assessments run May 4 to June 8; the spring Grade 9 math window runs June 8 to 30.

  6. By the end of September 2027

Grade 3 and 6 results are reported. Go through the report with the teacher to plan the next school year.

EQAO dates: common questions

When is EQAO in 2026-2027?

EQAO's 2026-2027 windows are: OSSLT November 3 to 30, 2026 and March 30 to April 19, 2027; Grade 9 math January 12 to February 5, 2027 and June 8 to 30, 2027; and the Grade 3 and Grade 6 assessments May 4 to June 8, 2027. Each school sets its exact dates within a window.

Does EQAO Grade 9 math count toward the course mark?

Yes. Under the Ministry of Education's Growing Success policy, starting in the 2026-27 school year the Grade 9 Assessment of Mathematics is weighted at 20% of the final mark in the Grade 9 math course (MTH1W) and counts as the course's written exam. In 2025-26 schools could weight it between 10% and 30%.

Do Grade 3 and Grade 6 EQAO results affect report cards?

No. EQAO says the Primary and Junior assessments do not impact report card grades for students in Grades 3 or 6. Results from the May 4 to June 8, 2027 window will be reported by the end of September 2027, and EQAO provides Individual Student Reports to schools, which share them with families.

Can my child opt out of EQAO?

EQAO says participation in its assessments is mandatory for students attending publicly funded schools. Parents and guardians can work with their child's school to request accommodations, and EQAO offers a range of accommodations for students with special education needs. If you have concerns, the school principal is the right first contact.

What happens if my child does not pass the OSSLT?

Passing the OSSLT is one of the requirements for the Ontario Secondary School Diploma. Students who have had two chances to pass and failed at least once can take the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Course (OSSLC) instead. Principals can allow earlier enrolment, and mature students can enrol directly. Fall 2026 results are reported by the end of January 2027.

How long is the Grade 9 EQAO math assessment?

The Grade 9 Assessment of Mathematics is online and has two sessions, A and B, each designed to take about 60 minutes. EQAO says it has 54 questions, 50 of them scored, and uses multi-stage adaptive testing. Sessions can be written back to back with a break or on separate days.

Does my child need to prepare for EQAO?

EQAO says no special preparation is required. Its practice and sample tests help students get used to the online format. For Grade 9, where the result counts in the MTH1W mark, steady work on course topics through the semester is more useful than last-minute drilling.
