How it works, in short
TaleemSquare NCEA maths tutoring is live, one-to-one online support in 45-minute lessons for Year 11 to 13 students working towards NCEA Level 1, 2 or 3 Mathematics and Statistics, including Level 3 Calculus and Statistics. Tutors plan from the achievement standards your child is entered for, internal and external, using NZQA past exams and exemplars.
Level 1 Mathematics and Statistics has two internal and two external standards, each worth 5 credits, and every NCEA certificate also needs 10 numeracy and 10 literacy credits. NCEA is due to be replaced from 2028, so tutors follow what your child's school assesses now. Plans start at NZ$149 a month, billed in New Zealand dollars.

What changes after a term of lessons

Clear on each standard
Knows which maths standards they are entered for, internal and external, and what Achieved, Merit and Excellence ask for in each one.
Ready for the external exams
Has worked through NZQA past papers and resource booklets under time, so the end-of-year exam format holds no surprises.
Confident with internal tasks
Understands the maths and methods behind internal tasks such as a statistical enquiry, while the assessed work stays their own.
What we cover
Lessons follow your child's own school or homeschool curriculum. These are the areas we work on most at this level.
Level 1 statistical enquiry
Explaining where data came from, displaying it and describing what it shows within a statistical enquiry: the skills behind AS91944, an internal standard worth 5 credits.
Level 1 mathematical methods
Using methods from at least two of number, algebra, measurement, and geometry and space on a problem about life in Aotearoa New Zealand or the Pacific: internal AS91945, 5 credits.
Level 1 external exams
AS91946, interpreting and applying mathematical and statistical information in context, and AS91947, demonstrating mathematical reasoning. Both are end-of-year exams worth 5 credits each.
Numeracy co-requisite
The maths skills the numeracy common assessment activity draws on, for students who still need their 10 numeracy credits.
Level 2 algebra and calculus
Algebra, graphs and an introduction to calculus, the work that Level 2 externals and the step up to Level 3 Calculus rely on.
Level 3 Calculus
Differentiation, integration and complex numbers for students taking Level 3 Calculus, often with university science or engineering in mind.
Level 3 Statistics
Statistical inference, probability distributions and judging statistical reports for students taking Level 3 Statistics.
Past exams and exemplars
NZQA past exams, assessment schedules and exemplars, so students see what Merit and Excellence answers look like before the day.
One typical question, worked through
How a tutor talks a student through a maths question at this level. The student does the working on the shared whiteboard; the tutor asks the next question.
A rectangular garden is 3 m longer than it is wide, and its area is 40 m². Find its width.
- Let the width be x metres, so the length is x + 3 and the area is x(x + 3) = 40.
- Expand and rearrange so one side is zero: x² + 3x − 40 = 0.
- Factorise: (x + 8)(x − 5) = 0, so x = −8 or x = 5.
- A width cannot be negative, so the width is 5 m and the length is 8 m. Check: 5 × 8 = 40.
Answer: Width 5 m (length 8 m)
The slip we see most often
Leaving x = −8 in as a second answer. In a reasoning question, saying why it is rejected (a length cannot be negative) is part of a complete answer, so students practise writing that line every time.
Signs your child could use help
- Not Achieved, or only Achieved, on recent maths standards
- Unsure which maths standards they are entered for this year
- Finds the external exam much harder than class work
- Still needs the numeracy co-requisite credits
- Needs Level 3 Calculus or Statistics for a university course
- Loses marks for not explaining reasoning in written answers
One of these on its own is normal. Two or three together usually point to a specific gap, and finding it is what the free assessment is for.
Taught to your curriculum, wherever you live
NCEA for families from the US
NCEA Levels 1 to 3 are studied in Years 11 to 13, about US Grades 10 to 12. Instead of one course grade, each standard earns its own credits and a grade of Achieved, Merit or Excellence, and Level 3 Calculus is studied at a similar stage to AP Calculus.
Level: Grades 10-12
Compared with GCSE and A-level
NCEA Level 1 is taken at about GCSE age and Level 3 at A-level age. Unlike GCSEs and A-levels, NCEA builds credits from separate standards, some assessed in class during the year and some in end-of-year exams.
Level: Years 11-13 (GCSE to A-level)
For families moving from Canada
Canadian provinces give credits by course, while NCEA gives credits by standard. A school places a newly arrived student at a level and chooses the standards they are entered for, and tutors work from that list.
Level: Grades 10-12
Compared with Australian senior maths
Australian states run their own senior certificates, such as the HSC in New South Wales and the VCE in Victoria. NCEA differs by splitting each subject into standards with their own credits, rather than giving one final mark or study score.

Who teaches your child
Every TaleemSquare math tutor passes the same five checks before their first class. Your child keeps the same tutor each week, and if the fit is not right we switch tutor at no cost. Tutors are based in the US, UK, Canada, Australia, Pakistan and India, and all of them teach in English.
Identity and references checked
Every tutor is identity-verified and reference-checked before teaching a student.
Subject test
Tutors pass a subject test before they are matched with a child.
Spoken-English assessment
Lessons are taught in English, so every tutor passes a spoken-English assessment.
Live sample lesson
Tutors teach a live sample lesson before they are hired, to show they can explain clearly.
Open to parents
Classes are one-to-one in a password-protected room. Sit in on any class or ask for a recording.
How we teach NCEA maths
Planned from the standards
The tutor plans from the exact standards your child is entered for and the school's assessment calendar, internals and externals alike.
Reasoning written out
Merit and Excellence answers need clear reasoning, so students practise writing out their thinking, not only the final number.
Honest help with internals
Tutors teach the maths and methods behind internal tasks but never write or complete assessed work, because internal work must be the student's own.
Lessons in New Zealand time
Lessons are booked in NZST or NZDT, after school or at weekends, with a WhatsApp update for you after each one.

EnrollCommon worries, honest answers
“Will a tutor outside New Zealand know NCEA?”
Tutors work from NZQA's standards, past exams and assessment schedules, and from your child's own course outline. You can see how the tutor teaches NCEA maths at the free assessment, before paying anything.
“NCEA is being replaced. Is it still worth the effort?”
Yes. Students sitting NCEA now still earn NCEA credits and certificates. The government's plan ends Level 1 in 2028 and brings in new Year 12 and Year 13 qualifications in 2029 and 2030, so tutors follow whatever your child's school assesses.
“Do we pay in New Zealand dollars?”
Yes. Plans for New Zealand families are billed in New Zealand dollars: NZ$149, NZ$209 or NZ$259 a month for 2, 3 or 4 lessons a week, with no registration or cancellation fee.
