How it works, in short

TaleemSquare Ontario math tutoring is live, one-to-one online support in 45-minute lessons for secondary students, from the destreamed Grade 9 course (MTH1W) to Grade 12 Advanced Functions (MHF4U), Calculus and Vectors (MCV4U) and Mathematics of Data Management (MDM4U). Tutors plan from your child's course code, the Ontario curriculum expectations and the school's unit order.

The university path usually runs MPM2D in Grade 10, MCR3U Functions in Grade 11, then MHF4U, with MCV4U taken after it or alongside it. Each course builds on the last, so gaps in functions show up quickly. Plans are C$115 a month for two 45-minute lessons a week, after a free assessment.

What changes after a term of lessons

Worked solution of a linear equation on the shared lesson whiteboard
Lessons happen on a shared whiteboard, so your child solves while the tutor watches and guides (example lesson).

Strong on functions

Works confidently with linear, quadratic, exponential and trigonometric functions, the thread that runs from MPM2D through to MHF4U.

Ready for tests and exams

Can finish a unit test or final evaluation in the time, with organised solutions that show every step of the method.

On the right course path

Knows which Grade 12 math courses their planned university or college programs list, and is building the marks for them.

What we cover

Lessons follow your child's own school or homeschool curriculum. These are the areas we work on most at this level.

Grade 9 MTH1W

Number, algebra including linear and non-linear relations, data, geometry and measurement, and financial literacy in the destreamed Grade 9 course.

Grade 10 MPM2D

Linear systems, analytic geometry, quadratic relations and the trigonometry of right and acute triangles, the base for Grade 11 Functions.

Grade 11 MCR3U Functions

Function notation and transformations, exponential and trigonometric functions, and discrete functions such as sequences, series and financial applications.

Grade 11 MCF3M

Functions and Applications: quadratic, exponential and trigonometric functions with more applied problems, for college or some university programs.

Grade 12 MHF4U

Advanced Functions: polynomial, rational, exponential, logarithmic and trigonometric functions and rates of change, a course many university programs list.

Grade 12 MCV4U

Calculus and Vectors: rates of change, derivatives of polynomial, rational, exponential and sinusoidal functions, and vectors, lines and planes.

Grade 12 MDM4U

Mathematics of Data Management: counting and probability, probability distributions, two-variable data and the culminating data investigation.

Tests and final evaluations

Timed practice in the style of your child's unit tests and final evaluation, with written solutions checked against Ontario's four achievement categories.

One typical question, worked through

How a tutor talks a student through a math question at this level. The student does the working on the shared whiteboard; the tutor asks the next question.

A colony of 200 bacteria doubles every 3 hours. How many bacteria are there after 12 hours?

  1. Write the model: P(t) = 200 × 2^(t ÷ 3), where t is in hours and t ÷ 3 counts the doubling periods.
  2. Count the doublings in 12 hours: 12 ÷ 3 = 4.
  3. Work out the growth factor: 2⁴ = 16.
  4. Multiply by the starting amount: 200 × 16 = 3,200 bacteria.

Answer: 3,200 bacteria

The slip we see most often

Using 12 as the exponent (2¹² × 200) instead of the number of doubling periods. Asking how many times it doubles before writing the power keeps the exponent right, a habit MCR3U and MHF4U both reward.

Signs your child could use help

  • Mark dropped after moving from Grade 10 to Grade 11 Functions
  • Needs MHF4U or MCV4U for a university program
  • Follows lessons but loses marks on unit tests
  • Struggles with function transformations or trigonometry
  • Taking MCV4U alongside MHF4U and finding the pace fast
  • Wants to raise a mark before university applications

One of these on its own is normal. Two or three together usually point to a specific gap, and finding it is what the free assessment is for.

Taught to your curriculum, wherever you live

Compared with US high school math

MCR3U and MHF4U line up broadly with US Algebra 2 and Precalculus, and MCV4U with an introductory calculus course plus vectors. Families moving from the US usually find the topics familiar but the course codes and order new.

Level: Grades 9-12 (Algebra 1 to calculus)

Compared with GCSE and A-level

Ontario Grades 9 and 10 sit around GCSE level, and MHF4U and MCV4U around AS and A-level Maths. Ontario marks through the year as well as at the end: from 2026-27, 65% is classroom work, 20 to 25% a written final exam and 10 to 15% attendance and participation.

Level: Years 10-13 (GCSE to A-level)

Ontario secondary math

Ontario students need three math credits to graduate, including one in Grade 11 or 12. Grade 9 math (MTH1W) is destreamed, Grade 10 is academic or applied, and Grades 11 and 12 offer university, college and workplace preparation courses.

Compared with Australian senior maths

Australian states teach their own senior courses, such as Mathematical Methods in Victoria. MHF4U and MCV4U cover functions and calculus at a broadly similar stage; the Ontario school places a newcomer in a course, and tutors work from that course.

Who teaches your child

Every TaleemSquare math tutor passes the same five checks before their first class. Your child keeps the same tutor each week, and if the fit is not right we switch tutor at no cost. Tutors are based in the US, UK, Canada, Australia, Pakistan and India, and all of them teach in English.

How we screen and match tutors
  • Identity and references checked

Every tutor is identity-verified and reference-checked before teaching a student.

  • Subject test

Tutors pass a subject test before they are matched with a child.

  • Spoken-English assessment

Lessons are taught in English, so every tutor passes a spoken-English assessment.

  • Live sample lesson

Tutors teach a live sample lesson before they are hired, to show they can explain clearly.

  • Open to parents

Classes are one-to-one in a password-protected room. Sit in on any class or ask for a recording.

How we teach Ontario high school math

Planned from the course code

The tutor works from your child's course code, the Ontario curriculum expectations and the order of units at their school.

Functions checked first

Grade 11 and 12 courses lean heavily on functions and algebra, so the free assessment checks those skills before anything else.

All four categories

Ontario marks thinking, communication and application as well as knowledge, so students practise explaining and applying, not only computing.

Before every test

Your WhatsApp note after each lesson says what was covered and what to practise before the next unit test.

Common worries, honest answers

“Do tutors outside Ontario know these courses?”

Tutors work from the Ontario curriculum documents and from your child's own handouts and tests, so lessons match what the school teaches. Judge the teaching for yourself at the free assessment, before any payment.

“My child is fine in class but drops marks on tests.”

That usually comes down to timing and written solutions. Lessons include timed, test-style questions and checking how solutions are written, since communication is one of the categories Ontario teachers mark.

“Can you help with MHF4U and MCV4U at the same time?”

Yes. Some students take them together. The tutor keeps both on track and uses MHF4U topics, such as rational and exponential functions, to support the derivatives work in MCV4U.

Frequently asked questions

Which math courses do Ontario universities ask for?

It depends on the program. Many university programs list MHF4U Advanced Functions, and many science, engineering and business programs also list MCV4U Calculus and Vectors or MDM4U Mathematics of Data Management. Check each program's admission requirements on its own page or on OUInfo, then plan Grade 11 and 12 courses from there.

What is the difference between MCR3U and MCF3M?

MCR3U Functions is the Grade 11 university preparation course and leads to MHF4U Advanced Functions in Grade 12. MCF3M Functions and Applications is a university/college course with more applied problems; it leads to college courses or MDM4U. MHF4U needs MCR3U, or the Grade 12 college course MCT4C, as its prerequisite.

Can MCV4U be taken at the same time as MHF4U?

Yes, in many schools. MHF4U is the prerequisite for MCV4U, and it can be taken before MCV4U or in the same semester. Taking both together is demanding, so steady weekly practice on functions matters, and the tutor can split each lesson between the two courses.

How are Ontario high school math marks worked out?

From 2026-27, Ontario course marks are 65% classroom work during the course, a mandatory final evaluation (20% in Grades 9 and 10, 25% in Grades 11 and 12, a written exam in math) and attendance and participation (15% in Grades 9 and 10, 10% in Grades 11 and 12). In Grade 9, the EQAO math assessment is that written exam and counts for 20% of the MTH1W mark.

How much does Ontario high school math tutoring cost?

One-to-one Ontario math tutoring costs C$115 a month for two 45-minute lessons a week, C$159 for three or C$199 for four, billed monthly with no contract or registration fee. The first assessment is free, and we refund the first 4 paid classes if your child is not more confident.

See all prices and plans

When should we start tutoring for Grade 12 math?

Ideally before gaps grow: early in Grade 11 Functions, or at the start of the MHF4U semester. Students who join mid-semester begin with the unit being taught now and fill earlier gaps alongside it, so it is rarely too late to start.
