How we wrote this
TaleemSquare offers online one-to-one tutoring, so we compete with Learner and are one of the alternatives below. Prices come from Learner's own pricing page and the sources listed at the end, checked in October 2026.
Learner is a managed online tutoring service: you answer a short assessment, have a call, and Learner matches your child with a tutor rather than leaving you to browse. Families like that, and Learner publishes its prices, which many services do not. The question is whether a plan built around a fixed monthly block of hours is the right shape, and the right price, for your child.
This guide lays out exactly what Learner sells, what you get for it, and the alternatives at lower and similar price points.
What does Learner cost and what do you get?
As of October 2026, Learner's pricing page lists a $25 trial and seven monthly plans. Learner describes sessions as costing $56 to $99 each; the per-hour column below is our arithmetic from the plan prices, not a Learner figure.
| Plan | Price a month | Hours | About per hour |
|---|---|---|---|
| Silver | $219 | 2 | $110 |
| Gold | $349 | 4 | $87 |
| Platinum | $589 | 8 | $74 |
| Diamond | $799 | 12 | $67 |
| Medallion | $999 | 16 | $62 |
| Star | $1,209 | 20 | $60 |
| Sapphire | $1,759 | 30 | $59 |
Every plan includes one-to-one tutoring across subjects and grade levels. Gold, Platinum, Diamond and Medallion add unlimited group classes and unlimited homework help; Silver does not. Learner says it hires about 3% of tutor applicants after a four-stage process, sessions can be recorded for you to review, and the first session is scheduled within 72 hours of your call.
Two terms matter most. Unused hours do not roll over to the next month, and you can upgrade or downgrade at any time, with extra hours available at your plan's hourly rate. A child who tutors once a week fits Gold at $349; twice a week is Platinum at $589. Over a ten-month school year that is roughly $3,490 or $5,890. Our Learner cost guide has the full breakdown.
Who is Learner a good fit for?
Learner is the better choice when:
- You want a matched tutor without doing the searching yourself.
- Your child needs several subjects from one account, including test prep and sciences.
- You value recorded sessions and a written plan.
- Your child will use every hour, so nothing expires.
It is a harder sell on the smallest plans, where the effective rate is over $100 an hour, or for a child who often misses sessions, because those hours are lost. Our Learner review covers the experience in more detail.
What are the best Learner alternatives at a lower price?
| Option | Format | Price | Compared with Learner Gold ($349 for 4 hours) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Khan Academy | Self-paced videos and practice | Free | Practice only, no tutor |
| Tutor.com | On-demand online help | Free through many libraries, or from $34.99 a month | Different tutor each time, no plan |
| TaleemSquare Starter | Live one-to-one, 45 minutes, school curriculum | $85 a month for two lessons a week (6 hours) | More teaching time for about a quarter of the price |
| Cuemath | Live one-to-one math, 40 minutes | $15 to $28.50 per class on 6 or 12 month plans | Cheaper per hour, long plans |
| Wyzant | Marketplace, pay per lesson | $35 to $60 an hour on average plus 9% fee | Similar hourly cost, no monthly plan |
| Varsity Tutors Live Access | Managed one-to-one plus group classes | $276 a month for 4 hours | Similar plan, slightly cheaper |
1. TaleemSquare for curriculum-matched one-to-one lessons
The format is close to Learner's: live, one-to-one, matched tutor, online. The structure is different. Lessons are 45 minutes and sold as a weekly rhythm rather than a block of hours: Starter is $85 a month for two lessons a week, Growth $119 for three and Intensive $149 for four, about $10.63, $9.92 and $9.31 a lesson. Tutors follow the child's school curriculum, including Common Core and state standards, on an interactive whiteboard, with progress updates to parents on WhatsApp.
There is a free 45-minute assessment before any payment, no registration fee, no long contract, free tutor rematch, and a full refund of the first four paid classes if your child is not more confident after them. Subjects are math, English, reading and writing for K to 12, so it does not cover sciences the way Learner does. See online math tutoring.
2. Wyzant for pay-as-you-go
Wyzant is a marketplace: you choose the tutor, message free, and pay after each lesson. Wyzant says tutors cost $35 to $60 an hour on average, with no upfront fees or packages, and a 9% service fee is added to each lesson under its student payment policy. Your first hour with a new tutor is protected by its Good Fit Guarantee. Hourly, it is close to Learner's larger plans; the difference is that nothing expires and there is no monthly commitment. See our Wyzant pricing guide.
3. Cuemath for math only
Cuemath offers 40-minute one-to-one math classes at $15 to $28.50 per class depending on grade and plan, sold as 6 or 12 month plans of 52 or 104 classes, with a $90 platform fee per billing cycle on 6-month plans. Per hour it is far below Learner, but the commitment is longer and it is math only.
4. Tutor.com for on-demand help
Tutor.com is free through participating schools, public libraries and employers, and for eligible military families; paid plans start at $34.99 a month. You get whichever tutor is available, so it suits homework questions rather than a weekly relationship. Check your library card before paying for anything.
5. Khan Academy for free practice
Khan Academy is a nonprofit and its lessons and exercises are free. It is not a tutor, but it is the cheapest way to add daily practice between sessions with anyone else on this list.
Which alternatives cost about the same as Learner?
Varsity Tutors is the closest like-for-like option: a managed membership with matched tutors. As of October 2026 its Live Access plan is $276 a month for 4 one-to-one hours plus unlimited live group classes, and Live Access Plus is $499 for 8 hours, against Learner's $349 and $589 for the same hours. Learner's Gold and Platinum plans also include group classes and homework help, so the two are closer than the headline prices suggest. Read the membership terms carefully; our Varsity Tutors cost guide explains what to check.
An independent private tutor with a strong local reputation can cost as much per hour as Learner's larger plans. The advantage is choosing the person yourself; the drawback is that you handle scheduling, assessment and cover when they are away.
How do you choose?
- You want matched tutoring, several subjects and session recordings, and will use every hour: Learner, or Varsity Tutors at a slightly lower price.
- Your child needs steady weekly math or reading help tied to school: a curriculum-matched one-to-one plan (option 1).
- You want to pick the tutor and pay only for lessons taken: Wyzant.
- Math only and a long plan is fine: Cuemath.
- Help tonight, ideally free: Tutor.com through your library, plus Khan Academy for practice.
What should you ask any provider?
- How is my child assessed, and does the plan follow their school curriculum?
- What happens to unused hours or missed lessons?
- Is the same tutor there every week, and how do we switch?
- What does cancelling involve, and when does it take effect?
- How will I see progress?
What to do next
- Work out how many hours a month your child will realistically use, then compare the real cost per hour across the options above.
- If you are on Learner, book all remaining hours before the month ends; they do not roll over.
- Book a free 45-minute assessment with TaleemSquare to compare a curriculum-based plan before you commit.
