How we wrote this
TaleemSquare offers online one-to-one math tutoring, so we compete with Thinkster and are one of the alternatives below. Prices and policies come from Thinkster's own pricing and FAQ pages and the sources listed at the end, checked in October 2026.
Thinkster Math is a hybrid. Your child does short adaptive worksheets in an app most days, an AI coach and a dedicated tutor review the work, and there is a live one-to-one session each week. For a child who will sit down and do daily practice, that structure is a real strength. For a child who needs someone to teach the concept before practising it, or a family that does not want to prepay for months, it can feel like the wrong shape.
This guide sets out what Thinkster publishes about its plans, who it suits, and six alternatives at different price points.
What does Thinkster Math cost and include?
As of October 2026, Thinkster's pricing page lists two plans, both covering kindergarten to grade 8 plus Algebra 1 and Geometry:
| Plan | Starting price | Tutor | Included |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ignite | From $22.50 a session | Dedicated tutor, the same one every session | Weekly live 45-minute one-to-one sessions, daily adaptive worksheets, 24/7 AI coach, mastery map and parent dashboard |
| Signature | From $45 a session | Senior, masters-level tutor, with special education options | Everything in Ignite, with the performance-backed money-back guarantee listed under this plan |
Plans come with 1, 2 or 3 sessions a week and monthly, quarterly or annual billing. The "from" prices are floors: you choose your child's grade band to see the actual figure, and higher grades cost more. Thinkster's home page adds two conditions that matter for budgeting: Ignite is only available on annual plans, and Signature requires a minimum six-month term.
Thinkster does not publish a monthly total. Our arithmetic from the floor prices: one Ignite session a week is about $97 a month (4.33 weeks), two a week about $195 and three about $292, and Signature starts at roughly double those figures. Daily practice is described as 15 to 20 minutes, five days a week. A 7-day free trial includes an assessment, a "Math Health Report" and a live session with a tutor, with no charge until the trial ends.
How does the Thinkster guarantee work?
Thinkster promises a full refund if your child shows no measurable improvement after six months of consistent engagement. The conditions on its site include completing weekly sessions, engaging with the AI coach regularly, completing 10 worksheets a week, watching 80% of assigned videos, attending at least 90% of scheduled sessions, updating goals every 30 days and submitting monthly feedback. Its FAQ ties the guarantee to annual plans.
It is a genuine commitment, but it is not a casual "cancel if it does not click" policy. Read the terms before you prepay, and ask Thinkster to confirm in writing which plan and billing cycle the guarantee applies to.
Who is Thinkster a good fit for?
Thinkster is the better pick when:
- Your child will reliably do 15 to 20 minutes of app practice most days without a fight.
- You like data: a skill-by-skill mastery map and a dashboard you can check.
- Your child is in K to 8, Algebra 1 or Geometry and needs steady reinforcement rather than re-teaching.
- You are comfortable with annual or six-month commitments in return for a lower per-session price and a guarantee.
It is a weaker fit when your child resists screen practice, is far enough behind that the concept itself needs teaching every week, or when you want to stay month to month. Our Thinkster Math review goes deeper on the format.
What are the best Thinkster Math alternatives?
| Option | Format | Commitment | Typical price | Best when |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| TaleemSquare | Live one-to-one, 45 minutes, follows the school curriculum | Monthly, cancel any time | $85 a month for two lessons a week, $119 for three, $149 for four | Your child needs live teaching every lesson, not just review |
| Cuemath | Live one-to-one, 40 minutes | 6 or 12 month plans | $15 to $28.50 per class plus a $90 platform fee on 6-month plans | You want math only and can commit for months |
| Mathnasium | In-center instruction, instructor shared across a table | Monthly membership plus enrollment fee | One Illinois center lists $449 to $579 a month plus $199 enrollment | Your child works better in a center |
| Kumon | Daily paper worksheets, center visits twice a week | Monthly per subject | Reported $130 to $220 per subject a month plus registration | You want a worksheet routine without live tutoring |
| Khan Academy | Self-paced videos and practice | None | Free | Practice alongside school or a tutor |
| Local tutor | In person, one-to-one | Hourly | Varies by area | You prefer face to face |
1. Live one-to-one tutoring every lesson
The biggest difference between Thinkster and a live tutoring plan is where the teaching happens. At Thinkster, most of the week is app practice and the tutor reviews it. At TaleemSquare, every lesson is live, one-to-one and 45 minutes long, on an interactive whiteboard, following your child's school curriculum (Common Core and state standards in the US).
Plans are month to month: $85 for two lessons a week, $119 for three, $149 for four, which is about $10.63, $9.92 and $9.31 a lesson. There is a free 45-minute assessment first with no card needed, no registration fee, free tutor rematch, progress updates to parents on WhatsApp, and a refund of the first four paid classes if your child is not more confident after them. See online math tutoring.
2. Cuemath
Cuemath is also app-plus-tutor, but its live classes are one-to-one and 40 minutes long. Its US pricing page lists $15 to $28.50 per class depending on grade and plan length, sold as 6 or 12 month plans of 52 or 104 classes, with a $90 platform fee per billing cycle on 6-month plans and none on 12-month plans. The commitment is similar to Thinkster's, so it suits families who are happy to plan for a school year. See our Cuemath pricing guide.
3. Mathnasium
Mathnasium is in person, at a center, with instructors moving between students. Each center sets its own prices. One Illinois center publishes $449 a month for twice-weekly visits (PreK to 8), $549 for unlimited, and $479 or $579 for high school, plus a $199 enrollment fee. It costs more than Thinkster per month but suits children who focus better out of the house. See our Mathnasium cost guide.
4. Kumon
Kumon is the original daily-worksheet program, on paper, with short center visits twice a week and no live tutoring. Kumon does not publish national prices; published estimates put tuition at $130 to $220 per subject a month plus a registration fee of about $50 to $80. Choose it if what you want from Thinkster is the daily routine, not the tutor. Our Kumon cost guide has the details.
5. Khan Academy
Khan Academy is a nonprofit and its resources are free. Its practice exercises and videos cover the same K to 8 and high school topics. There is no tutor and no one checking how your child works, so it is best as daily practice alongside school or a tutor rather than as a replacement for Thinkster's feedback.
6. A local tutor
An in-person tutor, often a teacher working evenings, can be the right answer for a child who needs a person in the room. Rates vary by area. Ask whether they follow your child's school curriculum, how they assess, and what happens if your child misses a week. Our guide to choosing a math tutor lists the questions to ask.
How do you choose the right alternative?
- Your child needs the concept taught, not just practised: live one-to-one lessons (option 1).
- You like Thinkster's model but want a different provider: Cuemath.
- Your child works better out of the house: Mathnasium or a local tutor.
- You want the daily worksheet habit without live tutoring: Kumon.
- Budget is tight: Khan Academy plus a short block of one-to-one lessons on the weakest topic.
What should you ask before signing up anywhere?
- What is the exact monthly total for my child's grade and session count?
- What is the minimum commitment, and how do I cancel or pause?
- How is my child assessed, and will the plan follow the school curriculum?
- Is the same tutor there every week, and can we switch?
- What are the guarantee conditions, in writing?
What to do next
- Use Thinkster's 7-day trial to find out whether your child will actually do daily app practice; that single question decides whether it is the right format.
- If the answer is no, or you want month-to-month billing, book a free 45-minute math assessment with TaleemSquare to see where the gaps are.
- Whichever you choose, get the monthly total, the minimum term and the cancellation steps in writing before you pay.
