The IAR, Skyline and early reading screening in Chicago
- Students in grades 3 to 8 take the Illinois Assessment of Readiness (IAR) in English language arts and math each spring. In 2026 the online testing window ran from March 2 to April 17.
- Chicago Public Schools' own ELA curriculum, Skyline, runs from Pre-K to high school and includes a Foundational Skills course for kindergarten to grade 5. Its digital curriculum is available to every district teacher and student.
- A 2023 state law required Illinois to adopt a comprehensive literacy plan by January 31, 2024, with guidance on screening tools that find students at risk of reading difficulties from kindergarten to grade 2. Each district still chooses its own curriculum.
A tutor can build the phonics and fluency skills Skyline's Foundational Skills course teaches, and the reading and writing the IAR asks for in grades 3 to 8. Sessions can follow the units your child's class is working on.
