How we wrote this
This is TaleemSquare's own comparison, so we are not neutral: we offer online one-to-one math tutoring for children and compete with Preply. Preply facts come from its own math page, help center and terms, checked in October 2026, with the main pages listed at the end. We have tried to say plainly where Preply is the better choice.
Preply is one of the best known names in online tutoring, and parents often find it when they search for an affordable math tutor. TaleemSquare comes up in the same searches. Both offer live one-to-one lessons online.
The differences are in who you are dealing with, how billing works, what happens to lessons you do not use and how each one handles young children. This page sets them out side by side.
What is the difference between Preply and TaleemSquare?
Preply is a marketplace. You choose a tutor from thousands of profiles, book a paid trial lesson of 25 or 50 minutes, and if you continue, you subscribe to that tutor for a set number of lessons every 28 days. Tutors set their own prices and work as independent contractors. Preply's math page lists over 5,500 math tutors, and if a trial does not work out, you can try up to two more tutors for free.
TaleemSquare is a tutoring service for children. After a free 45-minute assessment, we match your child with one tutor who teaches 45-minute lessons following the school curriculum, and you pay a fixed monthly price for two, three or four lessons a week. Every tutor passes five checks, and you get a short WhatsApp update after every class.

| Price | Set by each tutor; math lessons from $3, average $17 | $85, $119 or $149 a month |
| Billing | Every 28 days, renews automatically | Each calendar month in advance, until you cancel |
| First step | Paid trial lesson | Free 45-minute assessment |
| Cancel a lesson | 12 hours' notice or the lesson is lost | Reschedule free with 4 hours' notice |
| Unused lessons | Unscheduled lessons expire at each 28-day renewal; booked lessons are kept | A rescheduled class can move to the next month |

| After each class | Lesson Insights covers English lessons only | WhatsApp update on what was taught |
How much does Preply cost compared with TaleemSquare?
Preply's math page says lessons start from $3, with an average price of $17, and its help center says a standard lesson is 50 minutes. Its table of math lesson prices by tutor nationality lists $30 an hour for US tutors. The trial is charged separately, checkout adds a processing fee, and the minimum plan is 4 lessons per 28-day cycle. Because billing runs every 28 days, a year has 13 bills rather than 12. Our Preply cost guide goes deeper.
| Option | Price per lesson | Lessons a year | Cost a year, before fees | Cost per hour of teaching |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Preply tutor at $17 (Preply's average) | $17 for 50 minutes | 104 | About $1,768 | About $20.40 |
| Preply tutor at $30 an hour (Preply's US tutor figure) | About $25 for 50 minutes | 104 | About $2,600 | About $30 |
| TaleemSquare Starter plan | About $10.63 for 45 minutes | 96 | $1,020 | About $14.17 |
The Preply rows assume 8 lessons in each of 13 billing cycles; our plans are priced on 8 lessons a month, so 96 a year. Comparing cost per hour of teaching takes the different lesson lengths and counts into account.
To be fair to Preply: if you find a good tutor who charges less than about $11.80 for a 50-minute lesson, Preply costs less per hour of teaching than we do, before its processing fee. Our pricing page lists every plan, including UK, Canadian and Australian prices.
Is Preply set up for young children?
This is the biggest difference for parents of younger children. Preply's terms of service say its services are for users 18 and over, that 13 to 17 year olds may use them only with a parent or guardian supervising, and that account holders must not let anyone under 13 use them. Preply's math page says many of its math tutors have experience with school-age learners, and Preply's own blog recommends it for kids' math from elementary school up, so ask Preply how its terms apply before booking lessons for a child under 13.
Our service is built for children from kindergarten to Grade 12. Parents book and manage the plan, lessons follow the school curriculum, and every class is open for a parent to sit in.
What happens with missed and unused lessons?
On Preply, a lesson cancelled less than 12 hours before it starts does not return to your balance, and any lessons you have not scheduled before the renewal date expire; lessons already booked are kept. To stop the next charge, you cancel at least one day before the billing date. Preply says it may refund a billing cycle if you cancel your subscription, no lessons from that cycle have been used and you ask within 28 days of the charge, and it reviews each request individually.
Our plans are billed by calendar month with no contract, and you can cancel at any time, effective at the end of the billing month. You can reschedule a class at no cost with 4 hours' notice, and a rescheduled class can move into the next month; a class cancelled with less notice, or missed without notice, counts as delivered. If your child is not more confident after the first 4 paid classes, we refund those classes when you ask within 14 days of the fourth class. Our refund policy has the details.
How do you know if lessons are working?
Preply's help center says its Lesson Insights, AI lesson summaries, are currently available only for English lessons, and we found no parent progress reports described for math. You would rely on the tutor and your child to tell you how it is going.
After every class with us, you get a short WhatsApp update covering what was taught and how it went. If the fit is not right, we switch tutor at no cost.
Who should choose Preply?
- Your child is a teenager who can manage lessons with you supervising.
- You want to compare many tutors and choose by price, accent or schedule.
- You have found a strong tutor who charges well under $11.80 for a 50-minute lesson.
- You can keep to a steady weekly schedule, so lessons do not expire unused.
Who should choose TaleemSquare?
- Your child is under 13, or you want a service built for school-age children.
- You want one fixed monthly price with no registration or assessment fee and no paid trial.
- You want an update after every class and flexibility to reschedule at short notice.
- You want lessons that follow your child's school curriculum. Our online math tutoring page explains how it works.
Our verdict
For a teenager who can manage lessons and a family hunting for the lowest hourly rate, Preply's huge choice of tutors is hard to beat. For a younger child, or a parent who wants a matched tutor, an update after every class and rescheduled classes that carry over to the next month, TaleemSquare is usually the better fit. We are TaleemSquare, so weigh our view against a trial with each.
