How we wrote this
TaleemSquare offers online one-to-one tutoring, so we compete with Cluey Learning and are one of the alternatives listed here. Prices and policies come from Cluey's own fee schedule and pages and the other sources listed at the end, checked in October 2026.
Cluey Learning built its name on a simple promise: live online tutoring, one-to-one, with a learning plan built from the Australian Curriculum, from Year 2 through to Year 12. For many families it has been their first experience of online tutoring, and it does several things well.
It is also one of the more expensive ways to buy an hour of help, and its prepaid plans and notice periods catch some parents out. This guide explains how Cluey works, what it costs as of October 2026, who it suits, and five alternatives worth comparing before you commit.
How does Cluey Learning work?
Cluey sessions are one hour long and run entirely online on Cluey's own platform, which needs a Windows or Mac laptop or desktop with a webcam (Cluey says the platform does not yet work on mobile devices). Cluey describes a session as a 5-minute opening, 45 minutes of work, a 5-minute close and 5 minutes of written tutor feedback. Sessions are recorded, so your child can replay an explanation later.
There is no formal entry test. Cluey says it gets straight into tutoring: the tutor identifies strengths and weaknesses during the first session, then builds a learning plan from the Australian Curriculum that is updated after every session. Sessions can be booked between 7am and 10pm, seven days a week.
Cluey offers one-to-one tutoring for Years 2 to 12 and small-group sessions for Years 3 to 10. Subjects are maths and English through primary and secondary, plus Chemistry, Biology and Physics in Years 11 and 12, with NAPLAN preparation and coding also listed.
How much does Cluey Learning cost?
Cluey's public pricing page does not show dollar figures, but its Service Schedule and Fees page does. As of October 2026, one-to-one tutoring is sold on two plans:
| Plan | Price per one-hour session | Sessions paid in advance | Weekly sessions, about | Twice weekly, about |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Standard | A$99 incl. GST | 2 | A$429 a month | A$858 a month |
| Value Max | A$86 incl. GST | 4 | A$373 a month | A$745 a month |
The monthly figures are our arithmetic (price x 52 weeks / 12 months). The advance payment is taken at enrolment, and each week Cluey charges for any extra sessions needed to keep your account topped up. On-demand sessions cost the same as your plan rate. Small-group pricing is not on the fee schedule, so ask Cluey directly.
Cluey+ is a separate study platform that costs A$30 a month on its own for Years 2 to 12 and is included free while you have an active tutoring enrolment.
A few terms to know before you sign:
- Rescheduling. You can move a session up to 4 hours before it starts, once per session, and the new time must fall before your next regular session.
- Cancelling your enrolment. You must give notice equal to your plan's prepaid block: two sessions on Standard, four on Value Max. Prepaid sessions are used during the notice period and are not refunded, except where Australian Consumer Law requires it.
- Holidays. You can pause over the summer holidays by notifying Cluey. In the autumn, winter and spring breaks you can skip sessions for a Holiday Voucher if you cancel at least a day ahead. Pausing outside summer is not permitted.
Who is Cluey Learning best for?
- Years 11 and 12 students who need a science. Cluey covers Chemistry, Biology and Physics as well as maths and English, which most primary-focused services do not.
- Families who value recordings. Replaying a tutor's explanation before an exam is a real advantage for older students.
- Parents who want curriculum mapping and NAPLAN preparation. Cluey's plans are built from the Australian Curriculum, and it lists NAPLAN preparation for primary years and for Years 7 and 9.
- Students who can sit at a laptop. The platform does not support phones or tablets, which rules out some younger children and some households.
It is a weaker fit when the budget is tight (two sessions a week on Value Max comes to about A$745 a month), when you want an assessment before paying for anything, or when you want to be able to stop without using up a prepaid block.

1. One-to-one online tutoring with an assessment first
TaleemSquare is online one-to-one tutoring in maths, English, reading and writing for K to 12, with every child starting from a free 45-minute one-to-one assessment, no card needed. Lessons are live, 45 minutes long, on an interactive whiteboard, and follow the Australian Curriculum.
Plans are A$130 a month for two lessons a week, A$179 for three and A$229 for four. There is no enrolment fee and no contract: you can cancel any time and it takes effect at the end of the billing month. You get progress updates on WhatsApp, a free tutor rematch if the fit is wrong, and a full refund of the first four paid classes if your child is not more confident after them. See how it works for Australian families.
2. Kip McGrath: a free teacher assessment and a centre near you
Kip McGrath, founded in Australia in 1976, runs tutoring centres and online sessions with qualified teachers. Its online tutoring page lists 60-minute weekly sessions at a recommended price of A$78, using an interactive whiteboard and the same materials as its centres, and the initial assessment is free. For a parent who wants a qualified teacher to diagnose the problem before paying anything, Kip is a strong alternative. Our Kip McGrath alternatives guide covers prices in detail.
3. Kumon Australia: daily practice for one subject
Kumon Australia lists its tuition fee as A$160 a month per subject, plus a one-off A$100 enrolment fee, and the diagnostic test is free. Fees are payable in advance and are not refundable. It is the cheapest monthly figure here for a single subject, but the format is self-paced worksheets rather than taught lessons, so it suits a child who needs fluency and routine more than explanation. See our Kumon alternatives guide for who it suits.
4. Mathnasium Australia: maths centres several times a week
Mathnasium's Australian FAQ describes a flat enrolment fee and pricing that varies by program and area, with students attending two to three times a week, much like a gym membership. It works with children from Kindergarten or Prep to Year 10, starts with a verbal and written assessment, and sets no homework of its own, although sessions include time for school homework. Ask your local centre for a written price; our Mathnasium cost guide, linked below, shows what published centres charge elsewhere.
5. Matrix Education or a local tutor
Matrix Education runs term courses for Years 3 to 12, mostly at Sydney campuses (Bella Vista, Chatswood, Epping, Hurstville, Parramatta, Strathfield and Sydney City) and online through Matrix+. The NSW Year 7 Maths term course is A$747 for nine weekly 1.5-hour lessons in classes capped at 15, with a theory book, workbook, weekly quizzes and a topic test; Matrix+ online is A$445 a module. It is a class, not a tutor, and it teaches a term ahead of school, so it suits strong students on the selective and HSC track.
For a single senior subject, a local specialist tutor can be the best value of all. Our guide to maths tutor costs in Australia covers typical rates and what to ask.
How do the alternatives handle NAPLAN and the HSC?
NAPLAN tests skills children should already have been taught, so the most useful preparation is closing gaps in number, measurement and reading well before the test window, not months of practice papers. Any of the one-to-one options above can do that; our NAPLAN numeracy parent guide explains what the numeracy test covers by year level.
For Years 11 and 12, the picture changes. Cluey covers Chemistry, Biology and Physics as well as maths and English. Matrix is built around the NSW HSC. Our own one-to-one lessons cover maths and English through to Year 12. A local tutor who teaches your child's exact course remains the strongest choice for a single high-stakes subject.
How do you cancel or pause Cluey?
Give notice equal to your prepaid block (two sessions on Standard, four on Value Max) and keep attending, because those prepaid sessions are used during the notice period rather than refunded. If you have no other active enrolments, unused monetary credits beyond the notice period are refunded. Unredeemed vouchers are forfeited when an enrolment is cancelled, so use any Holiday Vouchers first.
Time your switch
Book your next provider's trial or assessment for the week your final prepaid Cluey session falls, so your child moves from one tutor to the next without a gap.
How do you choose between Cluey and the alternatives?
- Your child is in Year 11 or 12 and needs a science: Cluey, or a local specialist.
- Your child is in primary or lower secondary and behind in maths or English: one-to-one tutoring with an assessment first, online or at a Kip McGrath centre.
- You want a daily habit and a low monthly fee for one subject: Kumon.
- You want a physical maths centre two or three times a week: Mathnasium.
- You are in Sydney and want a structured class a term ahead of school: Matrix.
Whatever you choose, compare the teaching minutes your child gets each month with the monthly cost, and check the notice period before you pay.
What to do next
- Work out your real monthly spend on Cluey (sessions a week multiplied by 4.33, times the plan price) and the notice you would owe.
- Decide whether you want an assessment before paying. If yes, shortlist providers that offer one.
- Book a free 45-minute assessment with TaleemSquare and compare the plan you are offered with Cluey's on price and teaching time. Full pricing in Australian dollars is on one page.
