Inside the Grade 9 EQAO math assessment in Ottawa

  • The Grade 9 Assessment of Mathematics is written online in two sessions, A and B, each designed to take about 60 minutes. It has 54 questions, 50 of which count, and adapts to how a student is doing.
  • Students can use the built-in calculator, EQAO's formula sheet and their own scientific or graphing calculator, plus paper for rough work. EQAO's sample test has one session of 27 questions.
  • Under Growing Success, the assessment is weighted at 20% of the MTH1W mark from 2026-27. Ottawa students write it in the window of 12 January to 5 February or 8 to 30 June 2027.
  • An Individual Student Report is generated after the assessment. In Grade 10, Ontario math splits into academic and applied courses, so Grade 9 is the year to close any gaps.

A tutor can teach the five MTH1W strands, from algebra to financial literacy, work through EQAO's sample test in the same online format, and tidy up the arithmetic and fraction skills that cost marks in a timed session.
