How we wrote this

This is TaleemSquare's own comparison, so we are not neutral: we offer online one-to-one reading tutoring and compete with Hoot Reading. Hoot facts come from its own pages and help center, checked in October 2026, with the main ones listed at the end. We have tried to say plainly where Hoot is the better choice.

Parents who search for this usually have a child who is behind in reading and a budget to protect. Hoot Reading and TaleemSquare both teach reading live and one-to-one online, and both start by finding where a child's reading breaks down.

The real differences are lesson length, price, who teaches and how flexible each one is. This page sets them out side by side so you can decide which fits your child.

What is the difference between Hoot Reading and TaleemSquare?

Hoot Reading is an online reading tutoring service for children from Pre-K to Grade 8. Hoot says it started in 2018 in Winnipeg, Canada. Lessons are 25 minutes, one-to-one, on Hoot's own app. Hoot describes its teaching as a structured literacy approach rooted in the science of reading. Its home page says every tutor is a certified teacher with a B.Ed or higher, and its help center says each has at least two years of classroom experience.

TaleemSquare is live online tutoring in reading, writing and math from K to 12. One tutor teaches one child for 45 minutes on video with a shared whiteboard. After a free 45-minute assessment, the tutor works on the skills your child is missing, which might be phonics and decoding, fluency, comprehension or vocabulary, using books at your child's level. Every tutor passes five checks, including a subject test and a live sample lesson.

How much does Hoot Reading cost compared with TaleemSquare?

Hoot's pricing page lists $140 USD for one 25-minute lesson a week, $272 for two and $396 for three. Its user policies say you are billed every four weeks from your start date, which would mean 13 bills a year rather than 12, although its elementary and middle school pages say "Billed monthly", so ask Hoot which applies to you. Some Hoot program pages also show different figures, such as $148 for one lesson a week on its elementary page and $120 to $360 for its Pre-K and kindergarten program, so check the price for your child's program before you sign up. Our Hoot Reading cost guide has more detail.

Our plans are $85 a month for two 45-minute lessons a week, $119 for three and $149 for four, billed by calendar month with no registration fee. See our pricing page for UK, Canadian and Australian prices.

OptionBilledTeaching time a yearCost a yearCost per hour of teaching
Hoot Reading, 2 lessons a week$272 every four weeksAbout 43 hours$3,536About $81.60
TaleemSquare, 2 lessons a week$85 a monthAbout 72 hours$1,020About $14.17

The table uses the four-weekly billing in Hoot's user policies, so 13 bills and 52 weeks of lessons; if Hoot bills you monthly, as some of its program pages say, the yearly cost is $3,264. It also assumes 8 TaleemSquare lessons a month. Hoot's annual plans are discounted, and holidays, pauses and missed lessons change both totals, but the gap in cost per hour stays wide.

Who teaches, and how is reading taught?

Hoot sets a high bar for its teachers. It says each one holds a bachelor's, master's or PhD in education, has at least two years of classroom experience, completes 18 to 22 hours of training before the first lesson and passes background checks. Hoot says its lessons draw on the parts of structured literacy, from phonemic awareness and systematic phonics to decoding, vocabulary, fluency and comprehension, and its teachers work through a set scope and sequence, one skill at a time, guided by an instructional plan built from Hoot's own assessments.

Hoot also has outside evidence behind it. Evidence for ESSA rates its MTSS Tier III program as Strong for grades 1 to 4, based on one randomized controlled trial in Kansas City Public Schools in which the 956 Tier III students assigned to Hoot outperformed their control peers on i-Ready. The study tested Hoot's program in schools rather than its home membership, but it is a genuine strength, and few online tutoring services can point to anything similar.

Our tutors are screened through five checks: identity, references, a subject test, a spoken English assessment and a live sample lesson, and parents can sit in on any lesson. We do not currently run government criminal record checks. Instead of a set program sequence, our tutor plans each lesson around what our assessment found and follows your child's school curriculum.

Which gives your child more teaching time?

A Hoot lesson is 25 minutes; ours is 45. Short lessons have a real case: young children, especially in Pre-K and kindergarten, can lose focus in a longer session.

Longer lessons give room to read a full passage aloud, talk about it, practise the tricky words again and write a short answer, all in one sitting. For a child in Grade 2 or above who is a year or more behind, that extra time in each lesson can add up. Two of our lessons a week come to about 6 hours a month; two Hoot lessons come to about 3 hours 20 minutes every four weeks.

How flexible are the two services?

Hoot's policies are firm. You need 48 hours' notice by email to reschedule a lesson, and the new time must fall in the same billing period, because lessons cannot carry over. A missed lesson without notice counts as an absence and cannot be rescheduled. You can cancel with 7 days' notice before your next billing date or pause with 7 days' notice, annual plans may carry an early cancellation fee, and refunds or credits are at Hoot's discretion.

Our plans are billed by calendar month with no contract, and you can cancel at any time, effective at the end of the billing month. A class can be rescheduled at no cost with 4 hours' notice, and a rescheduled class can move into the next month. A class cancelled with less than 4 hours' notice, or missed without notice, counts as delivered. If your child is not more confident after the first 4 paid classes, we refund those classes when you ask within 14 days of the fourth class; our refund policy has the details.

Who should choose Hoot Reading?

  • Your child is between Pre-K and Grade 8 and needs help with reading only.
  • You want every tutor to hold an education degree and have classroom experience.
  • You want tutors who have passed criminal background checks: Hoot says every teacher does, and we do not currently run them.
  • Short 25-minute lessons suit your child's attention span, especially at Pre-K or kindergarten age.
  • An independent Strong rating from Evidence for ESSA matters to you.

Who should choose TaleemSquare?

  • You want 45-minute lessons and far more teaching time for the money.
  • Your child needs help with reading and math, or reading and writing, from one service with every subject on the same plans and prices.
  • Your week changes often and 4 hours' notice to reschedule helps.
  • Your child is in high school, past Hoot's Grade 8 limit, or you want lessons that follow your child's school curriculum. Our 2nd grade reading page shows how a lesson at that age runs.

Our verdict

If your young child needs a dedicated reading specialist and the budget allows $240 to $272 a billing period for two lessons a week, Hoot Reading is a strong, well evidenced choice. If you want longer one-to-one lessons, reading and math from the same service, or a monthly cost nearer $100, TaleemSquare is usually the better fit. We are TaleemSquare, so weigh our view against a consultation with Hoot.

Frequently asked questions

Is TaleemSquare cheaper than Hoot Reading?

Yes, per lesson and per hour. Hoot lists $272 USD every four weeks for two 25-minute lessons a week, about $82 for each hour of teaching. TaleemSquare charges $85 a month for two 45-minute lessons a week. That works out to roughly $14 an hour. Hoot's price includes teachers it says are certified and background checked, which some families value.

How long are Hoot Reading lessons?

Hoot Reading lessons are 25 minutes, live and one-to-one on Hoot's app. Some Hoot pages, including its family memberships page, still mention 30 minutes, but its user policies and pricing page say 25. TaleemSquare reading lessons are 45 minutes.

Does Hoot Reading offer a free trial?

Hoot does not list a free trial. It offers a free consultation with its enrollment team, and a membership's first lesson focuses on the Hoot Reading Assessment. It also sells a standalone 50-minute reading assessment with a written report for $89 USD. TaleemSquare starts with a free 45-minute one-to-one assessment.

Which is better for a child who is behind in reading?

Both are built for it. Hoot focuses only on reading up to Grade 8, with a structured literacy method, lessons guided by its own assessments and teachers it says are certified. TaleemSquare gives longer lessons on the skills its assessment finds, such as phonics, fluency or comprehension, follows your child's school curriculum and costs less. Comparing a Hoot consultation with our free assessment is a fair first test.

Can lessons be rescheduled?

With Hoot you need 48 hours' notice by email, and the new time must fall in the same billing period; a lesson missed without notice is lost. With TaleemSquare you can reschedule at no cost with 4 hours' notice, and a rescheduled class can move into the next month. A class cancelled with less notice, or missed without notice, counts as delivered.
